What I don't get is why the media always focuses on the perpetrator with tragedies like this. "Why did he do it?" "What made him tick?"...yadda yadda. What about the victims? Their names aren't in the headlines but they deserve more of our mental and emotional energy than the scumbag who killed them.

Really? No seriously, really?
You focus on the perp so that terrible, nightmarish thing like this doesn't happen again. The perp is the cause of all this. We remember the victims, obviously, but the people in charge need to assess why the perp did what he did.
9/11 --> You got Osama and some of his friends. Etc etc. Doesn't mean the victims are in any way forgotten, its just the energy needs to be spent fixing/analyzing what went wrong.

For OPSEC reasons I'm not going to go into the security of our barracks, but needless to say it would be far too easy for somebody to attack them.

My point was that, in the process of finding out what makes the perpetrator tick, they often paint him as the victim. He was harassed, etc, as if that excuses the attacks. If harassment is the cause, then what are the people in charge gonna do? Enact Muslim sensitivity training so we don't upset the Muslims? How would you prevent this kind of thing from happening again? You can't.

So making it clear, that if you push people around enough they might snap, is a bad thing now? If you don't know the cause of something, you can never prevent it. (at least not intentionally)

Yes you can prevent this sort of thing. It's done all the time, but people NOT killing other people is seldom considered news. (I did not kill Darth Rancid today for example. If i had brutally maimed and also killed him for forcing me to walk for 40 minutes instead of taking the subway, you might have heard about it. But now you haven't... through the news at least. It was prevented by my parents bringing me up in a way that made me think that sort of acts are crappy and made me able to repress that kind of urges, even under extreme stress)

Because they have the freedom of speech that protects them. With that said, just because you can do or something, doesn't mean you should. These sort of people are probably no different than the psycho that murdered all those people at Ft. Hood. They deserve to have their asses kicked. I hope next time they stand out on the street, and few Marines or other service members stop by and paint the sidewalk with their blood.
