Unhappy [LEGACY DRIVER 96.43.01] System freezes

Hello,

Since a few days, my computer freezes. First, I could not start XOrg at all. Then, Nvidia released the new legacy driver (96.43.01), and I could again start XOrg. I need the legacy driver since I have 2 video cards on my computer, one of them being an old Geforce MX400 (PCI).

Now, the computer completly freezes around 1 time per 2 or 3 hours. I have to hard reset it. Even the kernel hotkeys (Alt-Sys-S then Alt-Sys-B) do no work to properly reset the computer. The caps lock and Scroll LED of the keyboard simultaneously blink.

I use Debian SID on an AMD X2 4600+ (dual core), on kernel 2.6.22.9 and 3 monitors are attached to my computer.

The nvidia-bug-report.log file is attached to this message.

I tried the following things :
dmesg | grep MMCONFIG
-> no line found

idle=poll already used when booting the SMP kernel

My computer was rock stable before using the latest version of the legacy driver. I had to use that version to simply start XOrg. It didn't work anymore with the older version I used before.

I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.23, and the problem is still there.
That's really really really annoying. My computer which was rock stable before using the latest legacy driver now freezes 3 times per evening !!!

I have a few questions:
0) Have you verified that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS?
1) Does booting with the "pci=nommconf" kernel parameter have any impact?
2) According to your bug report, you're not using the GLX module which ships with the NVIDIA driver:

(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.4.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.3
(==) AIGLX enabled
(II) Loading extension GLX

This suggests that the NVIDIA driver is not fully or correctly installed, and should be reinstalled.

3) Does the instability persist if you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf ?

Thanks,
Lonni

Thanks for the reply.

I did all of what you suggested, excepted for upgrading the BIOS. I use the latest stable version of the BIOS (the motherboard is an Asus A8V Deluxe). A newer version is available, but it's a BETA version, and I don't understand why I should use that since it worked perfectly before using the latest legacy version of the nvidia driver.

Anyway, I'll now see if the freezes still occur.

BTW, I now get this message in the Xorg.0.log file :
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
Module class: X.Org Server Extension
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.1
(II) NVIDIA GLX Module 96.43.01 Wed Sep 5 19:47:01 PDT 2007
(II) Loading extension GLX

No more freeze ! I assume there was a problem when I reinstalled the latest legacy driver.

Thanks for the help !!!
