Default Folklore

Gamerang.com sent me notification that folklore has shipped from my queue. Should be getting it tomorrow or day after. Between Lair, Heavenly Sword and this one, I hope I can finish one before Uncharted the next game in my queue becomes available....

Got the disc today from gamefly. It is nice game. It's seems very linear at the moment, the Japanese demo was basically the prologue chapter of the full game. The US demo I think is just a few of the battle portions of the game stuck together with little shown of the story aspect of the game. At least I know now what all that japanese text was saying in the Japanese demo . It looks to be a long game. As you go through the game at various stages you can pick to be either of the 2 characters. If you like adventure games with some RPG elements this might be a game you'll like a lot. I am pretty sure I'll be holding on to this game till I finish it. Interesting thing is in a section of the bar you can talk to the bartender and one option is Downloadable quest so there might be a good deal of replay value later. Not sure if that would be enough of an incentive for me to want to buy the game though. Like the Final Fantasy series, I often bought them but after all those hours to finish it, I never replayed the games again.

Ok I played the demo and if it wasn't for all the reading then I'd probably pick this up no questions. Seriously though, what is the point of BD if they are going to just do the same old 'read me' approach. I could understand this for the downloadable quests, but other than that it's quite annoying. I like my console games to be read to me. PC is for reading...

Other than that it seems to be a very clever game with a Grim Fandango feel to it, mixed in with a little pokemon collecting.

Just out of interest, why do most Japanese games do away with voice overs? Is it to save on a voice cast? Or is it just the way it's done? Is it from the days of CD and cart to save space and has carried across into current gen games?

EDIT: Forgot to add. I expect a swift reply on all of this.

the game looks nice but the reading and the repetitive fight sequences is likely to make this game boring pretty soon. I have only played as the girl so far. Is the play style for the guy different?

Nope exactly the same with a few differences in the types of folk you can get. I am kind of getting bored of the game already but I have spent quite a bit of time playing it so I kind of want to finish it.

The biggest issues about the game for me are:
1) Very repetitive so you will probably get bored and the story is very very linear. Doesn't look like there is much branching.
2) The 2 characters are playing the same levels but with only slightly different folk. They should have built a few levels that are different from each other. Or make it so the 2 characters don't actually go through the same areas every chapter.
3) The powering up of the folk is interesting, but it just doesn't feel like you're upgrading anything. It doesn't seem to really power up.
4) Quests (from the bartender) take place in the same areas you went through so other than an increase in the number of enemies, nothing changes.
5) The quests themselves are boringly done, "this is happening" "could you find out why" or "solve this for me", and "I'll give you this in return".
6) Did I mention it is very Linear ? No surprises, by the time you get to an area you are already prepared for it. There should be areas for you to discover where if you go there you're screwed till you level up some more.

I liked the demo, but far from loved it. Seems like it will get repetitive as others said and the lack of voice acting is lame now-a-days.

I'll probably grab it after the holidays when it's cheaper and there's less coming out.
