Default NVS 440 failure to start

HI,

I just received a PNY Quadro NVS 440 PCI express 1x card (256mb ddr3 sdram)
and am trying to get it going in Fedora 7.

The motherboard is asus P5K deluxe wi-fi ap (Bios version 0404 latest stable)
the case is antec take3

note this is NOT a 16x PCI-e card but a 1x PCI-E card

X fails to start with the nvidia driver, and leaves the monitor in a "power save" state
(within a couple of seconds after typing startx)

i have not yet tried
- putting the card in a different box (that also happens to run fedora 7 and also has pci-e 1x)
- upgrading the bios to the latest beta release of the BIOS
- passing the kernel 'acpi=off'
- windows or 32-bit fedora

i HAVE tried:
- passing the kernel 'noapic' 'pci=conf1' 'pci=routeirq' and combinations thereof
- a couple of different flat panels
- both livna rpms and the official nvidia installer (self built module)
- generating the xorg.conf via nvidia-xconfig with various options
- using the nv driver, which works fine (except for the obvious limitations)
- searching the forum turns up one similar problem with the same card

HERE ARE SOME INTERESTING SNIPPETS:

dmesg | grep MC
Code:
ACPI: MCFG 7FF80400, 003C (r1 A_M_I_ OEMMCFG 6000715 MSFT 97)
PCI: BIOS Bug: MCFG area at e0000000 is not E820-reserved
PCI: Not using MMCONFIG.

ran startx -- -logverbose 6
at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
Code:

Fatal server error:

I am attaching two of the the nvidia bug reports i made
Is there any way i can get any more debug info?
Anything else i should try?

Thank you,
Risto

UPDATE:
plugging the card into one of the 16x slots produced no output earlier
but i just plugged it into the other 16 slot on the board and it looks like i have at least a single display using the 'nvidia'drivers so far

I have a few questions:
0) Does this problem persist if you remove 'rhgb quiet' from your GRUB configuration, and reboot?
1) Its not clear from your last comment whether you're able to use both GPUs when the card is in the x16 PCI slot?
2) Does this problem persist if you boot with the maxcpus=1 kernel parameter?

Is your main display connected to a kvm by chance? I have major problems with mine since I am trying to use it through a KVM. As soon as the card powers on, it attempts to get EDID data from the monitor. Sometimes a KVM will not allow this data to pass to the card and the card will not enable that display. It would be nice if there was a fix to force the GPU to enable without EDID.

Lack of an EDID would not cause the errors that treksler is reporting. Also, treksler's bug report clearly indicates that the EDID is detected fine.

There are numerous, documented workarounds for dealing with the lack of an EDID. I'd suggest reading the driver README, and searching this forum for them.
