nvidia unable to access lcd monitor

I have been trying for 4 days now to get ubuntu linux running on a friends of mines computer

He has a geforce 7600GS

and the monitor in question is a :
Packard Bell L17C 17" Monitor
the link for the monitor is at:

Which is a relabled AOC monitor..

The problem is the edid values stored in the monitor cannot be read

I have done everything that I can think of and have made 0 progress
ddcinfo fails
ddcxinfo-knoppix produces wonderful modelines which do not work
I have tried all of the edid related options in the xorg.conf file to no avail

Part of the problem is that I am helping him remotely-ie- i live in Germany and he lives in england. This kind of experience is the #1 type of ultra-negative experience for a linux-noob-ie. can't even get the monitor working.

I am quite versed in Linux- have been using it for 10 years- never encountered a monitor before which simply will not work with nvidia drivers, or barring that at least using proper resolution.,

nvidia does not see the monitor
nv can access the monitor albeit only at 1024x768 instead of the 1280x1024 native resolution

I even had my friend boot windows and run the phoenix.exe program to generate an edid file for the monitor-still no luck.

I am at wits end. My friend has just had the worst possible linux installation experience I have personally ever witnessed.

What can be done?

If I were to attach the raw file generated by phoenix.exe could someone help put together a working xorg.conf for this monitor.

please, please help.....
