With my IBM/Lenovo R61 with an integrated
nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M the display brightness control does not work in X11 with the nVidia driver loaded, even if NVreg_EnableBrightnessControl=1 is set. The brightness control works with nv or vesa drivers and works on the VT. I am using the latest 100.14.19 nvidia driver with gentoo amd64. The thinkpad and gentoo wikis mention this bug as known, however, I haven't found this bug on this forum. Is there a solution for this problem? Thanks in advance, Fuchs additional information: fuchs@thinkfox ~ $ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/registry VideoMemoryTypeOverride: 1 EnableVia4x: 0 EnableALiAGP: 0 NvAGP: 3 ReqAGPRate: 15 EnableAGPSBA: 0 EnableAGPFW: 0 SoftEDIDs: 1 Mobile: 4294967295 ResmanDebugLevel: 4294967295 FlatPanelMode: 0 DevicesConnected: 0 RmLogonRC: 1 VbiosFromROM: 0 ModifyDeviceFiles: 1 DeviceFileUID: 0 DeviceFileGID: 27 DeviceFileMode: 432 RemapLimit: 0 UseCPA: 4294967295 DetectPrimaryVga: 1 EnableBrightnessControl: 1 PanelPWMFrequency: 1018 PanelBrightnessLimits: 65280 UseVBios: 1 RMEdgeIntrCheck: 1 fuchs@thinkfox ~ $ lspci | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 0429 (rev a1) |

The new 100.14.23 drivers did not seem to fix the brightness though they have a note about fixing hotkey support for some Lenovo Notebooks.

Using ubuntu 7.10 amd64, uninstalled nvidia-glx-new and installed 100.14.23, no working brightness controls with x still (or ability to set brightness at all!), only in console mode. Using a lenovo t61p w/ 570m quadro..
I mean no disrespect for nvidia engineers but.. What exactly was fixed again? I use compiz and have a t61p w/ 570m quadro so I should be hit for 3/4 of those fixes, but I don't notice any difference: I could already use full resolution with the nvidia driver and switch from compiz to console w/o problem, and with the exception of brightness controls, all my hot-keys already worked. And nvidia engineers: I'd _really_ like brightness controls to work, its almost a necessity. |

I have the same problem. With my Samsung R70 with an integrated
nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS the display brightness control does not work in X11. additional information: ferit@ferit-labo:~$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/registry VideoMemoryTypeOverride: 1 EnableVia4x: 0 EnableALiAGP: 0 NvAGP: 3 ReqAGPRate: 15 EnableAGPSBA: 0 EnableAGPFW: 0 SoftEDIDs: 1 Mobile: 4294967295 ResmanDebugLevel: 4294967295 FlatPanelMode: 0 DevicesConnected: 0 RmLogonRC: 1 VbiosFromROM: 0 ModifyDeviceFiles: 1 DeviceFileUID: 0 DeviceFileGID: 0 DeviceFileMode: 438 RemapLimit: 0 UseCPA: 4294967295 DetectPrimaryVga: 1 EnableBrightnessControl: 0 PanelPWMFrequency: 1018 PanelBrightnessLimits: 65280 UseVBios: 1 RMEdgeIntrCheck: 1 ferit@ferit-labo:~$ lspci | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GS (rev a1) |

it would be *really* nice if nvidia would put that higher on their priority list.. it should be _very_ easy reproducable and investigateable.... So fixing it should not be too hard, except they're rewriting the complete driver....
But missing this feature _SUCKS_ -.- Open your drivers and i do it myself... |

Same here with Lenovo T61. It's been broken since the inception of this laptop line, but one needs to keep in mind that the laptop has been on the market only since May...

Just as a side note: this is _not_ fixed in the new beta driver for R61 Notebooks.
And yes, this is an important feature, as battery time is increased a lot by reducing the brightness, and it takes too much time to switch to a VT and back each time you want to adjust the display brightness. I am not a driver developer, but I think it can't be that hard, because it works with vesa and nv as well... Please fix this asap, nVidia. I will provide information and test things if nececary. |

I bought this laptop 4 months ago.. and still nothing.. at least S3 works, with maximum brightness after resuming (very annoying since switching to a vt is sloooooow). |

Sorry for my impatience, but now i ordered a laptop with intel graphics chip. It'll be much better in that regards i think since i can hack the drivers myself..
Good luck to everybody, maybe nVidia will find and hire some additional driver programmers for linux. @nvidia guys: yeah i know, you're doing your best, thanks for all your effort. Maybe i'll buy something based on nvidia techology in the future.. |
