Regarding the inability to set backlight on the display using the GeForce 8 series in Linux:

Is this considered a bios problem unrelated to the video card, or can NVIDIA release a driver that would allow backlight control? Is there any discussion at NV about this issue?

Come on guys. It's not just (sometimes not at all) the video card that does the brightness control. On my dell (which comes with different video cards) laptop, brightness works independent of OS. (fn + up/down)

Perhaps, but in many of our cases, brightness control works fine in Linux w/ the NV driver.
Only when using the Nvidia driver does it stop working...
That's driver related, no?

Might be so, yes. Did you provide a detailed bug report? Maybe there is/should be a module option to tell the nvidia driver to ignore brightness control.

It is really possible to control backlight w/ NV driver on 8600GS?

Long time ago, yep. (think it was w/ the 169 series driver but same issue w/ newer drivers).

Well this is with a Quadro FX570M (8600M GT based) on HP 8510w notebook. But yes, works fine adjusting brightness via FN-F9/F10 w/ NV driver. No-go w/ Nvidia driver.
