The hotkeys for brightness up/down don't work but neither do other hotkeys work. So that problem isn't related to the Nvidia drivers.
I can control the brightness with the slider of the KDE PowerManager applet and by writing a value (between 0 and 100) into /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness. Neither of the two later methods worked prior using 180.60.

Well i don't agree with you since i just have to replace my nvidia drivers for the nv or the nouveau drivers and the hotkeys works just like they should.

In my computer brightness doesn't work even with the KDE PowerManager, but i can try with this /proc/acpi/video... thanks for the info!.

Happy to see that I'm not alone here !
THe same on sony vgn-fz21e

Nothing appears in /sys/class/backlight, and that's why all other project that are managing power control and fnkeys can't do anything !

Personnaly, I've bought a laptop with nvidia because I though it would be compatible because there is a linux driver... but now I think I had less problems with another video controler !

Just as an update/bump, I'd like to say that this is also affecting me, ever since I bought my new laptop last September.
Clevo M860TU / 9800M GTS, with various drivers from whatever was around last September, up to the very latest beta driver: 190.18

No control from laptop hotkeys, or in any software tools. Nothing in /proc/acpi/video or in /sys/class/backlight.
Backlight seems to be stuck on minimum, as I can't use it if I'm near a window.

Thumbs down Re: Brightness control not working with nVidia driver

The mistake was to buy a pc with nvidia... I decided to buy a sony with nvidia, because I thought it would be well supported because of the nvididia linux driver...
But I've checked, and Intel is 100% supported by the community, and Intel is providing all the information needed to linux developper... so until nvidia is changing his strategy, mine will be to buy hardware from intel...

If you are stuck on dim, try using the brightness hotkeys before the kernel loads (at the grub prompt). It actually works there for me, and stays at whatever I set it to between reboots. I just wish I could adjust it once I am booted up.

schmirrwurst: If Intel had fast 3D graphics processors like nVidia, then I would probably never buy an nVidia card again.
The fact is though all the intel graphics cards (not cards, just chips, really) are basically 2D-only and can't cope with games/CAD/etc. About the most 3D they can handle is aero/compiz.
As for AMD/ATI, as far as I am aware DAAMIT still has even worse linux support than nVidia.

john: Thanks for that. I'll try that next time I boot.

Brightness control not working on notebook Samsung R580 js03 w Nvidia 256.29 prop driver and GT330M video

Linux kernel 2.6.34 , xorg 1.8.0, nomodeset. (opensuse 11.3 milestone 7 x32)

/proc/... /sys/... setting can't help (can set brightness in it but don't affect on anything)

With nouveau brightness controls works fine...

Talking Re: Brightness control not working with nVidia driver

Update:

After upgrading the R780 Bios to the newest version from Samsung site the
brightness control is 100% working. Here is attached new bug report so Nvidia
guys can compare what changed and why it's working now.

Best regards
