There seem to be many more cases yet to be identified then.

It appears 169.04 beta has resolved brightness issues with Lenovo T61.
Thank you, NVidia team.

More or less fixed for R61 as well,
you guys rock, thanks a lot.

(more or less as in: behaviour is a bit
weird when switching up, as it goes
1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
but as this happens as well with brightness
in /proc/acpi/ibm/ I guess this is not
nvidias fault.)

Hi zander
Any change with this brightness issue with NVidia 8600GS? Do you know if this can be changed for next release of the driver?
Thank you.

169.04 did not resolve brightness control on my thinkpad T61p and this is a big deal to me. I'm running out of steam with trying to embrace linux for my laptop.

169.04 did NOT solve problems on my Sony VAIO FZ11S.
I tried EVERYTHING to be able to change the brightness. No way.
Smartdimmer and nvclock (stable and svn version) do not work at all.
I can't use my laptop with linux at this moment due to this problem....

Thumbs down Re: Brightness control not working with nVidia driver

169.07 does not solve this issue, even not for levono laptops

Bug 346370 - nvidia: broken brightness(backlight) fn-keys functionality on samsung R70 aura T7500 Denet notebook

That is not true. In my lenovo T61 it works since 169.04.

Brightness control works for me with 169.07 and .04 on Gutsy.
I believe i had to modify acpi scripts in order for brightness control to work.
In /etc/acpi/ my thinkpad-brightness-down.sh is:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
manufacturer=`dmidecode --string system-manufacturer`
case "$manufacturer" in
    LENOVO*)
        echo down > /proc/acpi/ibm/brightness
        exit
    ;;
    *)
        . /usr/share/acpi-support/key-constants
        acpi_fakekey $KEY_BRIGHTNESSDOWN
    ;;
esac
and thinkpad-brightness-up.sh is the same as above with "up" instead of "down"

one case does not generally implement it for all, you smart boy...

have you tested the whole levono serie?
what is about T61p for example? (see comment #30 or follow the link in #32)

That is why i wrote my statement. Only because it doesn't work for you doesn't mean it generally works for no one.
Search the threads, it's solved for almost everyone around here.
