Using the 2.6.23.x kernel, I experienced this same problem with a number of different NVidia driver versions.

When I downgraded my kernel to 2.6.22.x, the problem went away with every NVidia driver, including 169.07.

The latest drivers do not solve the problem on my Sony VAIO FZ21M.

I don't care that much about battery life as i have my book plugged in most of the time, but I'm more worried about my eyes watching this glowing LCD all day long.

I believe i had to modify acpi scripts in order for brightness control to work.
In /etc/acpi/ my thinkpad-brightness-down.sh is:
Code:
...
    LENOVO*)
        echo down > /proc/acpi/ibm/brightness
...
Does not work for me. Echoing to /proc/acpi/ibm/brightness from the command line directly does not work either.

Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon
Linux 2.6.22-14-generic SMP
Lenovo R61 with 1680x1050 LCD
nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 140M (rev a1)
Driver: nvidia-glx-new 100.14.19+

Revision numbers reflect feature state of upstream software, but they add patches for security and whatever they consider essential/non-breaking updates.

Just to add my feedback:
I'd really, really, really appreciate it if nVidia open-sourced their drivers, then this kind of breakage wouldn't happen in the first place.
Technical advantages aren't too relevant if the drivers have problems.
And I'm concerned that driver troubles will tend to increase more than decrease once the card is off the marketing radar.
(In fact I have been considering selling the Quadro card and buying an ATI/AMD one. I'd like to avoid that though.)

Test the latest driver, the one you are using is completely outdated.

Doesn't work with 169.12 on my Toshiba Tecra S5, Quadro NVS 130M; in fact now I can't even change it from VT becouse all VTs are black since 169.12.

Unhappy Re: Brightness control not working with nVidia driver

Just to add, does not work on HP Compaq 8510w (quadro fx570m).

Nvidia,

Any update on the eta or has the resolved driver been posted? Please advise and I can provide an nvidia bug report if necessary or is this issue still known?

Thanks!

I've confirmed that brightness control works on my Toshiba 5105 (using the Linux-x86-96.43.05 driver) only when using a single head. Running two headed disables the function.

Doesn't work with Samsung Q45 (GeForce 8400M G) either! I'm usuing Ubuntu 7.10 with 169.12 Drivers.

echo -N <LEVEL> >> /proc/acpi/video/NVID/LCD/brightness as root works but only in VT not in X.

I hope it will be fixed soon!

this seems to be the hopeless case. nvidia boys do simply ignore this brightness bug on mobile systems for years.

this issue is still not solved...

the brightness fn-keys works out of the box, fully hardware supported by phoenix BIOS, no additional driver is needed (but can be used, like it does on windows vista, it uses the vista way to change brightness). nvidia driver loads (nvidia splash) and the brighness keys stops to work...

thank you - linux nvidia team for ignoring this issue for years, one more time.
