/me 110% Agreeing LCD brightness control not working is yet another lack of care of linux laptop customers, together with being a really nasty surprise for who spends a lot of money on professional laptops like we did.

Thinking my battery could last 1hour more if just you @nvidia did your homework, or simply go opensource (it's high time guys, wake up, we're in 2008) makes me shiver.

As a Linux from-factory adopter, if I was in DELL people I would boycott Nvidia graphic chips. In the meanwhile, somebody told me also these people does nice graphic hardware http://www.amd.com/us-en/ .

Well, its 2008's APRIL, I have just installed the 169.12 driver version for x11 and still NOTHING while our eyes and batteries are frying with the fabulous brightness control bug, or I prefer to say UNIMPLEMENTED FEATURE.
I'm pretty sure Nvidia is working extremely hard to fix this issue, but i really do belive that its very complex and painful to implement such kind of functionality.
Thank you Nvidia to threat your costumers as a clown.

We are really exausted about this problem, Nvidia tell us more about what's going on!
Situation:
/proc interface behaves correctly reading and setting values, but with NO EFFECT.
Brightness STILL not working under Linux on

09ST downgrade actually fixed other FN keys, but _NOT_ brightness.

Nothing changed!! Still my hardware FN control for brightness stops working as X turns on.
If I uninstall Nvidia module and use "nv" driver it works ok, but it's obviously unusable.. :/

Well, brightness function keys don't work for me either, but I can adjust brightness by entering VT, the way lemurenkind suggested:

Laptop: HP 8510w
OS: Kubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) 32bit
Kernel: 2.6.24-16-generic i686
Video card: NVidia Quadro FX 570M
Driver: NVidia 169.12 (Linux-x86) (nvidia-glx-new package)

*** The solution: ***

1. Press CTRL-ALT-F[1-6] to enter virtual terminal
2. Log in as user

3. sudo -s

4. echo -n <LEVEL> >> /proc/acpi/video/C14B/C15F/brightness

   where <LEVEL> must be a valid brightness level. Also, the directory path (after proc/acpi/video/) might be different in different laptops, takes a little searching.
5. Logout and return to X with CTRL-ALT-F7

Hopefully, this will adjust the brightness level, and the adjustment will persist until you restart or re-adjust through VT. It ain't pretty, it ain't fast, but it sure beats a headache any day

I have the same problem: Sony VAIO with GeForceM 8600 GS.
I've installed 173.08 beta drivers recently, brightness IS NOT WORKING. Again.
NVidia fails to fix this bug for a year!!!!!! Moreover, suspend/hibernate are not working too. Is there someone from NVidia corp. to answer a silly question: "When are you going to fix this bug?"

i got a sony vaio fz 31 m, nvidia 8400 gs.
fn-keys for brightness not working on linux, ubuntu hardy.
for the rest i got everything else working nicely.
i got the newest beta driver 173.08 installed.
the driver is way better than the 169.xx one, but brightness still not adjustabe...
