aha!!
NVIDIA is to blame:
quote from tech.brief:
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/IO_26269.html

"SmartDimmer Technology
SmartDimmer—a feature uniquely manageable through the GPU—is an intelligent
way to manage notebook panel power consumption. For example, it dims the panel
when appropriate. The GeForce 8M Series or NVIDIA Quadro NVS/FX notebook
GPU driving the notebook panel is the only component fully aware of, and
responsible for, driving the display on the LCD panel. This unique capability forms
the basis for SmartDimmer technology, which lets users preset certain brightness-
related preferences through a control panel in Windows Vista (Figure 1). It also lets
the GPU manage the panel display within these limits. As a result, the GPU can
reduce power consumption from one of the biggest power users in a notebook—
the display panel. This reduction seamlessly delivers enhanced battery life for the
user."
--> i guess they mean with user vista..
what i find strange is that i buy a laptop because of certain components like the graphic card, but that it wont work cross-platform... and there is no warning on the laptop itself. it means in other words: screwed (slightly)
this should be a case for the courts in EU...
should we gather together?

No.
But when you are at it: sue some car manufacturers,
because your car doesn't run with diesel,
so it is not really cross-fuel and there is no big warning label on it.

(To make matters worse: most of the laptops are shipped with
a "designed for microsoft windows $version" label,
not a designed for $anydistro-linux, $anydistro-bsd, solaris,
opensolaris, BeOS, zeta, OS/2 and Fredux)

Why do people always think that going to a court solves
all problems?

Guys, I think that any court is not going to solve our problem at once. What I'm (and maybe all of us are) asking for is a single response from NVIDIA - if they are working hard on this problem, when will they fix it to make us happy?

I don't think the court is the solution, but we need a place where collect all people compliants. If you check on the forums of the major linux distros you will find more than one post complaining about this brightness problem.

yeah you're right, of course, the cross-fuel-car thing opened my eyes,
and i understand that in a world of commerce things have certain priorities.
its just a bit frustrating cause i bought this nice machine cause it has nvidia on it and when i am live-video-performing in a dark place, the screen really blends.
but we definitely need a petition towards at least to nvidia AND <your-laptop-manufacturer> AND a web-place to gather all new-nvidia-card-users together, maybe things speed up from both sides than as right now, just give a look to the net,
we are spread like corns all over the ocean...

Another one with the same problem, Sony Vaio VGN-FZ. I actually bought this machine because of the NVidia chip, didn't see the stab coming at my back.

How about to start a petition like this:
With all respect to nVidia corporation, we, the users who bought laptops with GeForce 8M series graphic adapter are tired of humiliating treatment from nVidia Linux team.
Our problem is, that we cannot reduce monitor's brightness.
This bug has beep reported in april 2007, and nothing has changed yet. The "brightness" topic has been visited 10 thousand (!) times - more than any non-sticky topic on nvnews Linux forum.
Last time we had a clear answer from nVidia representative at the end of 2007. Nvidia has been keeping silence for almost half a year!
.....
.....
.....
If you would like to correct or add something to the petition, you're welcome!

The brightness bug is not limited to the GeForce 8M. I have a GeForce4 440 Go with the same issue. Whatever the problems are, they span the product lines.

Some people have working configurations, and assume that the problems are user configuration related. This is not the case. I've confirmed that the same notebook with the same hardware and software will have working or not working brightness controls depending on whether an external monitor is connected or not, for example.

Since we have no access to the source, only Nvidia can correct these issues. The only thing we can do is wait (for years), assuming we still have the hardware by then.

I send an e-mail to NVidia about this. They send a reply that they are aware of this issue and have it reported as bug #410754. Let's hope this also means they are doing something about it.

I should note that that bug covers the Sony Vaio VGN-FZ38M only. Every laptop vendor has its own different, incompatible way of controlling the backlight brightness which is why it's so difficult for a unified driver to make it work all of the time and why NVIDIA doesn't even try to provide notebook drivers for Windows.

Thank you for responding in this topic. Could you please explain the situation with other laptops? For example, mine is VAIO VGN-FZ21Z, so, do I have to report the brightness bug separately?
