Default GeForce 8600M GT on mac pro 17"

I am trying to setup the nvidia module on an Ubuntu 7.10 (kernel 2.6.22-14-generic). Everything looks ok when I set up the package NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run (see the bug report).
But it is not working. My mouse does not look like a mouse. It is stripped and as soon I am logged in gnome my screen gets totally red and the system can freeze.

I have no problem if first Xorg uses the nv module and after I change to nvidia and restart gdm with it. And I can use the nice effects

There is a bug somewhere or I did something wrong?
