Just take away the return code check and error message right after.

Cheers

Thanks a lot! This did it for me (at least for the last 5 Mins :-) ). So it IS because of the kernel version...interesting

Thanks,

To compile 100.14.09 on 2.6.23.x kernel, I made the following changes:

1. kmem_cache_create() in nv-linux.h would be one parameter less for 2.6.23.x, take away one NULL at the end such that

#define NV_KMEM_CACHE_CREATE(kmem_cache, name, type) \

0, 0, NULL); \
}

2. The 2 references to unregister_chrdev() in nv.c would return void in 2.6.23.x.

ok, i need something more.. obviously i'm not so much into programming..

1: I've built a 2.6.23.1 kernel . Following guides they suggest to add nvidia-kernel-sources from my distro package manager but the version shipped with ubuntu is 100.14.19 so quite useless for me. I want to build 100.14.09.

2. I succeded in installing 100.14.19 and 100.14.23 without compiling any nvidia-kernel-sources, everything i nedded i suppose was made up by package. So why do i need that package if drivers compile the same?

3. If i want to modify source like you.. which files do i have to edit? (i just found in /usr/src/modules that are the ones i downloaded through ubuntu and i dont think they're gonna be useful for anything)
AND: the second edit means i have to substitute the value of unregister_chrdev from (nv_major, "nvidia") to (void) or else?
please i can't tolerate anymore these freezes...

edit:
i just needed to read a bit.
for the others: to find the source run the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.09-pkg#.run with the --extract-only option.

and about the third question... just delete (or comment with // before every line) the 2 lines where it appears unregister_chrdev and the line right after.

I had the very same problem. My laptop is an A6Tc with GeForce 7300Go. I used 1.0-9755 without problems. Using "irqpoll", the laptop seems work fine now with 1.0-100.XX driver series too.

If you're using a GeForce Go 7200/7300 based notebook and started experiencing stability problems after upgrading from 100.14.09 or an older driver release to 100.14.11 or a more recent driver release, you may be experiencing symptoms of a known regression. This regression should be fixed in future NVIDIA Linux graphics driver releases.

I'm having a similar problem with a Gigabyte 7300GS with 128 MB of RAM on a desktop PC (Gigabyte Athlon 64 with 570 chipset) running Fedora 7.

The drivers 100.14.11, .19, and .23 all cause a freeze after a short period of use (from a few minutes to several hours, at least partly dependent on activity). Usually everything freezes, the display, the keyboard, the mouse. Once the mouse was able to move but not activate buttons, etc. In every case, my only solution is to power down or reset manually.

The nv driver never freezes, but I have a problem with the video that shows up intermittently: colors are reversed, typically white to black but sometimes also blue to yellow. Restarting x usually fixes the problem. I dealt with Gigabyte about the hardware, but after they checked my card twice and finally swapped it out, I still had the problem. It doesn't appear with the 100.14.xx drivers.

If this is in fact a known problem that will be fixed in the next release, I'll wait for that, surviving meanwhile with a faulty 2d video.

4GB RAM, 2-Seagate SATA2 320GB drives in RAID 1 array, Samsung 21.6 inch monitor

On Phoronix they thought this week, so maybe it will be next week
But I don't know if the fix for this problem will be included

I have a 7600 GS card with the same system freeze problems. Nothing can be found in the log files when the freeze happens. 100.14.11 from 100.14.09, I believe.

Any idea how long this will take? I need a stable system to do my work, as well as preserving my files...

Same here...
169.04 seems to have fixed the freezing on my GeForce Go 7950 GTX (although only time will tell), but this morning, with compiz enabled, I got this:
Code:
[ 1308.770490] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0000 0200 07800000 0000a7d8 00000000 00000000
[ 1308.787302] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 36,  L1 -> L0
followed by the same old screen flickering at random intervals. Annoying enough to turn drive me to turn compiz off...
