Default Anybody can launch X in 8bpp?

I run Fedora7 and nvidia diriver 100.14.19.
And my video card is Quadro FX 560.
I cannot launch X in 8bpp with nVidia Display Setting(GUI program from nvidia driver).
Anybody can launch X in 8bpp? Please, show me your xorg.conf.
Thank you in advance.

Why do you need 8bpp? The drivers still support it but it is not hardware accelerated anymore.

Please, refer to http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=100612 .

My app can be launched only in 8bpp. But, CIOverlay cannot heal my situation.
So, I tried to launch X in 8bpp to use my app.
Unfortunately, I could not launch X in 8bpp.
Now, I cannot use my app any more.

Have you thought about using Xnest or Xephyr? It are nested Xservers which you can launch when you are in X. I think both support 8 bit.

Try changing the default depth with "nvidia-xconfig --depth 8".

Dear Aron,
I tried "nvidia-xconfig --depth 8" and I couldn't launch X.
Attached "nvidia-bug-report.8bit.log" is the report when I tried 8bpp X.

Dear Thunderbird,
I tried to launch Xnest like "Xnest :1 -ac -depth 8".
But it couldn't launch X window, and report below,
==================================================
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 78 (X_CreateColormap)
Serial number of failed request: 135
Current serial number in output stream: 136
==================================================
And, attached "nvidia-bug-report.24bit.log" is the report when I tried Xnest in 24bpp X.

It is very hard to use 8bpp application, nowadays......

According to your bug report, the X server is running fine. What exactly is the problem you're seeing?

Oh, and Thunderbird, core X rendering at 8-bit is hardware accelerated. Where'd you get the idea that it wasn't?

Dear AaronP,

Yes, I saw my bug report in 8bpp.
It looks nice, but X windows did not show in my monitor.
Small window said me "failed to launch X, I will try in 2 minutes."

Please, talk to me about overlay. 8bpp X window is second solution. Best solution is X window that supports 8bpp overlay. Though my bug reports(in 24bpp) said overlay enabled, Xnest cannot start with above error.

Thank you for your reply, AaronP. And I will wait your advice.

I'm assuming from your other thread that your application is segfaulting. You should work with the vendor of the application to determine why it's crashing.

That program runs well in 8bpp, and crushes in 24bpp with segfault.
And, that application has no concern in this thread to prevent misunderstanding.

I exampled other program, 'Xnest'. Xnest can support 8bpp sub X window if main X window support 8bpp pseudo color. Am I right?

Why did Xnest get dead with error, that was posted in #6?
Do my box support 8bit overlay? If support, how I can launch any apps that runs in 8bpp?

Thank you for your advice, in advance.

The PseudoColor visuals are slightly different between depth 8 and the color index overlay. The former has 16 bits per colormap entry while the latter only have 15. I suspect the different colormap format is confusing Xnest and your application.

If you have the xv application or the xscreensaver package, you can run one of those applications with the "-visual PseudoColor" argument to see if your overlay is working. xwininfo will tell you the depth of a given window.
