whoa! Please dont say that. She is my beloved machine. Moreover it works fine in Windows.
Could you suggest any tests that could be done in Windows to confirm this issue? |

Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with Windows to recommend anything.
I'd like to see a new bug report generated with NvAGP=0. Also, have you verified that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS? |

Oh, yes sure. I will post it.
About BIOS, this motherboard was phased out long ago in 2003. . So what I am using right now is the latest stable BIOS available. |

I have attached bug report for 1.0.9643.
Also I found this error in nvidia-installer log. echo; \ echo " ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid."; \ echo " include/linux/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are mis sing."; \ Could it matter here? |

No, what warning is harmless if the driver installed successfully.
In your bug report, I see a large number of these errors: (EE) NVIDIA(0): Error recovery failed. (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** (EE) NVIDIA(0): Error recovery failed. (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** Have you tried reducing the ATP aperture in the BIOS? Does this problem persist if you're not using the TripleBuffer option? |

So you want me to reduce AGP aperture size in BIOS? And disable Triple Buffer in xorg.conf?

old story
these errors were introduced in 9625beta-october 2006 and they're still not fixed (one year passed...w00t) status: 1.0-8776 works fine 1.0-9625beta corrupted screen/hard lock 1.0-9742beta Installer warns me that my video card is not supported by the driver, yet i did not see anything mentioned in the Changelog, and the README says my card is supported. Loading the module would yield a similar error. 1.0-9629/9631/9639/9643: logo + freez or if i move the mouse i might get it to enter into GNOME/Xfce, but the screen is corrupted, after a minute or so, X will crash back to a screen corrupted GDM, Xid errors, w/ or w/o composite see dedicated thread (it gets interesting from page 7) @rahuljawale: your only chance is driver 8776+patch the patch is needed for the driver to compile on newer kernels. it works, at least you'll have a working driver (no Compiz/Beryl, but OpenGL/composite) |

hey Licaon, thanks for the information. I had came across this magical 8776 and the patch for newer kernels. But since going by the info you provided , 8776 seems to be the only way out. But man, it's sad to know that i cannot use Beryl/Compiz. That was the main motive for me to install Nvidia drivers. Anyways. Will give it a shot and let you know. Moreover there are few more like me who have been facing this trouble.
Here is the link to the thread that I came across: GeForce2 0x01a0 & 96.43.01 works badly One question before leaving, why isn't NVIDIA fixing this issue? |

Licaon, I tried that. But at nvidia-installer throws up an error whenever i try to run patched installation. Error is:
rahul@rahul-desktop:~/Desktop/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8776-pkg1$ sudo sh nvidia* nvidia-installer: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected ![]() |

nvidia-installer is a binary executable, not a shell script. Just run "sudo ./nvidia-installer".
