for kernel 2.6.23 ( tested on 2.6.23.9 ), one also has to apply the modifications from here: http://home.hiwaay.net/~craigg/linux/NV_patch.html

yet the driver 87.76+first_patch+this_patch compiles fine on 2.6.23

any idea on how to make 87.76+patches work on Xorg 7.3 (xserver 1.4.0) ?
(since -ignoreABI+disable composite don't work)

Code:
(II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//nvidia_drv.so
(II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
        compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.8776
        Module class: X.Org Video Driver
(EE) ============= WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING =============
(EE) This server has a video driver ABI version of 2.0 but this
(EE) driver is designed to work with versions before 2.0. The
(EE) driver will continue to load, but may behave strangely.
(EE) Please check http://www.nvidia.com/ for driver updates or
(EE) downgrade to an X server with a supported driver ABI.

Default same A7N266-VM x is buggy

i am using slackware 12, 2.6.23.9 NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.01-pkg1.run, asus a7n266vm board, i had the same problem xlockup the only way was to reboot the machine.

after struggling with nvidia freezing today i was able to get x working with NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.01-pkg1.run nvidia driver, after editing the xorg.cong file after adding
Code:
  Option "NvAgp" "1"
to "Device" Section.

still that draggy effect is there X is buggy, it is very difficult to use x.

shall i try
  1. installing the old driver " NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8776-pkg1.run" and patching, as mentioned earlier
  2. do i, also need to manually patch, for the 2.6.23.9 series kernel, actually that patch looks for some other drivers
any help is appreciated
regards rkrishna

oh no, according to the changelog Slackware is using Xorg 1.4.0 since Tue Oct 16 14:51:30 CDT 2007, so 87.76+panch1+patch2 will fail since the ABI has changed
so unless nVidia fixes it's legacy drivers for us geforce2mx integrated users, we have no accelerated driver (or we should stick with xorg-server-1.3.0)

I might as well throw my experience into the fray...

At first, X was unable to get past the nVidia logo without hanging and requiring a hard reboot of the machine. Setting NvAGP to 0 (i.e., disabling AGP) makes the system usable, but with plenty of drawing errors. I've attached a bug report log.

Since a fix for this doesn't seem to be forthcoming, maybe we should all try tweaking our settings and seeing what (if anything) helps to reduce the effects of this.

Also, could we get some word from the nVidia folks? Do you have any idea at all what might be doing this? The lack of feedback besides "try this" and requests for information is a little worrying.

anyone with a A7N266-VM GF2 Integrated tested the new 96.43.05 driver?
i'm interested if it works at all, since the readme says it's updated only for compatibility with the new Xorg/kernels
