Default Upset Seagate customers get cash back, free software

As part of a settlement in the Cho vs. Seagate Technology case, a fairly large number of Seagate hard drive users are eligible for cash back and free software. Seagate customers who purchased a hard drive in OEM or retail packaging between the dates of March 22, 2001 and September 26, 2007 are eligible to receive one of two different settlement benefits per hard drive purchased:

- The "cash benefit" is available to customers who purchased a Seagate hard drive between March 22, 2001 and January 1, 2006, and entitles customers to receive 5% cash back on the amount they paid for the hard drive, before taxes. Claims for a cash benefit must be filed using the mail-in form, which is available on the settlement web site.

- The "software benefit" is available to customers who purchased a Seagate hard drive between the dates of March 22, 2001 and September 26, 2007, and entitles claimants to a free copy of the Seagate Software Suite, which retails for $40. Claims for a software benefit can be filled out online.

It's a dispute over how harddrive space is calculated.

Plaintiff claims that Seagate's use of the decimal definition of the storage capacity term "gigabyte" (or GB), whereby 1 GB = 109 (1 billion) bytes, misleads consumers because computer operating systems report hard drive capacity using a binary definition of GB, whereby 1 GB = 230 (1,073,741,824) bytes, a difference of approximately seven percent.

You've got to be kidding....somebody sued over that?!?!?! What a world we live in....

EDIT: And it's only available to the US.... that sucks. I wanted free software!!!! I've bought like 8 seagate drives over the last couple years.

I got an email about that. I am not sure how they got my email exactly. Nor am I sure how to prove how much I paid for it (it ended up being something like $30 after a few rebates.)

Does anyone know what software it is? I can easily reprint an invoice for a drive that qualifies, but I want to know if it's even worth bothering.
