Default 720p works with nv driver, not nvidia

Summary:
With the nv driver, I can get 1280x720@60hz working with this modeline I got from $gtf 1280 720 60 :
Modeline "1280x720_60.00" 74.48 1280 1336 1472 1664 720 721 724 746 -HSync +Vsync

which lets me run 720p over a DVI-HDMI cable to the LCD tv.
however, when I try to run the nvidia driver (for 3d support for compiz-fuzion, google-earth, mild 3d games), the screen gets "blippy" (constantly resizing itself vertically more than 10x/second)

xrandr confirms that the nv driver runs at 60hz, but the highest option with nvidia is 53hz for 1280x720. notably, the nvidia driver works at 720x480, where it lets me use higher refresh rate.

Setup:
mobo: ASUS M2NPV-VM with GeForce 6150 graphics
DVI-HDMI cable
TV: Panasonic TC-32LX60C 32" tv with native res at 1366x768, but only accepts 480i/p, 7720p, 1080i
OS: OpenSUSE 10.3, 64-bit
nvidia driver #: 100.14.19

Apparently the nv driver reads my modeline and implements it correctly, whereas the nvidia driver ignores it and trys to create it's own. I've tried various options to disable EDID, but none of those seemed to work (although I am open to the idea that I implemented the wrong in xorg). I think I just need to force the nvidia driver to use my modeline.
So, after much googling, tweaking, and failing, it has come to my attention that I can't solve this problem myself, so any knowledge you are willing to share is greatly appreciated.

Relevant snippets of /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf are attached in file xorglog.and.xorgconf.txt

First, the refresh rates returned by xrandr are erroneous when using the nvidia driver. This is expected behavior, and has been documented in the driver README (as well as in many threads on this forum) for nearly a year.

I'm not sure that I understand why you needed to create a modeline, when 1280x720 already is already a natively defined mode in the EDID of your display. Why not just remove the modeline and request 1280x720 ?

fair enough. removed the modeline, and it works.... with the nv driver. all I do is add the letters 'idia' to that, and when I restart x the screen starts to blip and shake. which... is where I was. Is there any reason that the nvidia driver would add something that confuses the TV? It's not very smart, doesn't sleep, or turn on if there's a signal from the computer...

Please run the following command for both the nv & nvidia drivers:
xvidtune -show

and post the output.

thanks,
Lonni

"1280x720nv" from xvidtune -show
nvidia: . "1280x720" 63.75 1280 1328 1360 1440 720 723 728 741 hsync -vsync
proper res, blips still
nv: . . . . "800x600" 40.00 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync
800x600 res... now that doesn't make sense

"1280x720edid" returns:
nvidia: . "1280x720" 74.25 1280 1392 1432 1648 720 725 730 750 hsync +vsync
blips
nv: . . . . "1280x720" 74.25 1280 1390 1430 1650 720 725 730 750 +hsync +vsync
works fine

Do you want more nvidia-bug-report.log's?

I keep wanting to say it's the TV's fault, but that doesn't explain why the nv driver works fine...
