Well we will have to agree to disagree to a cerain point. I fully acknowledge that DX10 edges out an ini tweaked DX9 and you have to see it in motion to really tell the difference.

But in all honesty the difference that is there is negligable at best.

Both modes look great and the DX9 with the tweaks is a blessing for those who are having trouble running the demo in DX10.

DX10 is more efficient than DX9 at rendering DX9 effects, but when it comes to DX10 effects, it's not efficient, at least not with current hardware.

I play DX9 vista 64bit with the french blog ini tweaks. Just get terrible mouse lag under DX10, which I don't under DX9.

I get sun rays, waves and paralax mapping. All in all the most beautiful gaming experience I've seen. It's hard to believe it's a game and not just an nvidia style video card techno demo.

Legend, I believe you man.

I think those dx9 vs dx10 comparison pics were done using low or medium quality shaders/textures for the DX9 pics. I really do. It would be a sneaky dastardly scheme to sell more copies of vista. I was soo close to buying a 2nd hdd and installing vista on it just for this game but after this realization and seeing that my game looks no different than with DX10... hahah....

Mabey after vista's SP1 and some decen nvidia drivers I'll think about it.

So to sums it up , the DX10 (Very High) differences over DX9 (High) are [Not counting what can be done on DX9 via a tweak]:

1) Object Blurring (or object-based motion blur)
2) Sun Shafts
3) 3D Waves
4) Parallax Ocullsion Mapping
5) More Trees (Objects) ?
6) Higher Quality Soft Shadows ?

what else ?

- I noticed that shooting the waters gives better splashes in DX10 (i.e. with specular) which isn't there on DX9 , but not entierly sure. i might need to take screenshot comparsions.

ok & for the heck of it what DX10 features you can/still can't enable in DX9 ? list them please.

Much more than most people reaslize. Apparently there is no real special beneift to DX10 other than it supposed to be better at rendering all the fancy eye candy.. It's the DX10 HARDWARE that is more important.

Read up here on an extensive list of things that can be changed.

The only ones i'm sure you can't do is the 3d waves and the very high shader lighting. I think soft particles can't be done without DX10 as well, but I never did a close up comparison.

all you have to have is the console command entered during the game or added to the config file.

e_water_ocean_fft 1

That's it.

Again, referring to this tweak guide, you can see an extensive list of graphics variables that are broken down to their value based on detail level. You can clearly see what the differences are between high and very high settings as well as a more in depth guide on values you can change to take the graphics levels of detail much higher than very high settings would typically give (view distance, foliage draw distance, etc)
