The first solution is to use the vesa driver for now, and then, never buy an nvidia card again.

I do think that it will be fixed eventually. However I'm disapointed as to why it is taking so long, first G80 cards came out Nov. '06 which is quite a long time ago. Randr 1.2 was also released a while ago...

You're right, it's smoother with vesa driver

Well, I am using an 8600 GT, but with 177.13 beta there were huge improvements to 2D. Very smooth now, especially when power management is not active (after rotating desktop or doing something intensive, it deactivates for a short time).
No glitches then, everything quite fine.
I guess it might be worth a try to test it on an 8400 GS, too.

@olifre:

There are several workarounds for disabling powermanagement,
even good ones, which only disable it when the machine
is AC powered.

e.g.

Code:
while true; do

    powerstate=`cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/AC/state | awk '{print $2}'`

    if [ $powerstate = "on-line"  ]; then
       nvidia-settings -q all > /dev/null
    fi
    sleep 25;
done
Not the good way doing it, but the best possible way to keep it
dynamic (not possible with PerfSrcLevel, afaik).

nvidia is, as I was told, working on getting powermizer customizable.

So there is a real improvement over 173.x? But the release notes don't mention anything in that domain...!?

I have an 8800GT and 2d performance is horrible. Minimizing, maximizing, dragging, especially resizing and firefox scrolling is worse than my card from the last millennium (which was an ATI).

I hope nVidia fixes this before I buy an ATI.

I switch today my first system from NVIDIA 8800GTS to AMD/ATI HD4850.
The actual catalyst 8.6 driver is in Debian unstable repository.

The card and the driver was in 5 minutes installed.

No problems anymore.
2d performance is perfect.

I will definitely consider switching when the prices for the ATI 4850 drop. I hear the performance is similar to the 8800GT!

can I just ask what you mean by perfect and what software do you use that was slow before and is fast now?

Just curious...

Umm, he means things that should be perfect on every system such as scrolling in firefox, resizing windows and general all round 2D performance. (You can't run KDE4 with one of these cards with their Linux drivers...)

Yeah I know, I was looking for something more specific, I run kde4.1b2 on my 8600m gt and I agree that it can be quite awful. But firefox scrolling and kde4 performance may not have the same root causes ( e.g. I have read that on the ati open driver firefox 3 does not work as well as konq due to issues of firefox and exa).

Seeing as I use konq it would be useful to know if kde4 is nice with this card (urgh...maybe I should have said that straight away )
