Might be a stupid question but could 8800GTS 640 and a 8800GT 512 work in SLI or do the cards need to be identical ?

AFAIK, they need to be cards of the same type(GT+GT or GTX+GTX) but you can SLI cards from different vendors.

Assi9 - let me know when you get a chance to do this. Also make sure you do not have any other SLI profile software running at all.

If it overwrites what the Custom SLI Profiles in the 169.01 or 169.04 drivers it will not work.

If you force AFR 1 or 2 or split rendering it will not work. It is a truly Custom SLI Profile only used by Nvidia's new driver set.

If you set it to AFR 1/2 or split rendering you will lose performance.

Please do this to a T!

Try this...

Uninstall the video card drivers from safe mode
Run disk defragmenter
Reinstall 169.04
Only enable SLI in the first screen of the control Panel
Apply
Close Control Panel, run Crysis GPU benchmark

See if it works. Then Go through your normal steps 1 by 1 to see what is causing SLI to stop working (if you got it to work to begin with)

Hope this works for you

As I have already said ... I know what I am doing.
I know how to uninstalling old drivers and how to clean up ... and I know how to install new drivers.

SLi is working for every other game I have ... it just makes no difference with Crysis ... for me.

I don't need to do what you are saying as I have already done that and more when I installed the new drivers.
I have not used any profile other than the custom one that it uses by default.
I do not have any other nHancer type software running and never have.

Nothing stops SLi from working ... it has never worked with this game ... for me.

I know you were trying to help ...

What I mean by more is I have used driver cleaner to clear/clean the registry after the uninstall ... is that really going to stop SLi from working in this game ...

I really do appreciate you trying to help ...

However ... this thread is full of a repeating ... "do this" ... and as I had already said ... I have done that and it doesn't make a difference.

I did the steps you mentioned Sowk, and it changed nothing... Theres something you arent telling us like: SLI DOES NOT WORK IN THIS DEMO.

I'm done with this thread. I've just come to the conclusion that you guys that claim SLI is working are just pulling our legs, or you aren't reading your results right.

Anyways, I'll wait for the full game to come out and deal with SLI then, rather than spending time getting smoke blown up my ass by random people on the internet.

Assi9:

The Nvidia "patch" is somewhat built into the new 169.04 drivers. I couldn't get SLI working in 169.01 as well, but since trying out these new drivers I've gotten performance similar to Sowk. You can also toggle SLI on and off in the Control Panel and see the results for yourself.

Here are the numbers I get with the new drivers.

Default In-game All High

Code:
!TimeDemo Run 0 Finished.
Play Time: 55.22s, Average FPS: 36.22
Min FPS: 15.88 at frame 144, Max FPS: 45.34 at frame 1765
    Average Tri/Sec: -26845010, Tri/Frame: -741163
    Recorded/Played Tris ratio: -1.24
!TimeDemo Run 1 Finished.
Play Time: 47.69s, Average FPS: 41.94
Min FPS: 15.88 at frame 144, Max FPS: 57.52 at frame 73
    Average Tri/Sec: -31164444, Tri/Frame: -743040
    Recorded/Played Tris ratio: -1.23
!TimeDemo Run 2 Finished.

    Recorded/Played Tris ratio: -1.23
!TimeDemo Run 3 Finished.
Play Time: 47.76s, Average FPS: 41.87

DirectX 10 Effects Enabled

Code:
!TimeDemo Run 0 Finished.
Play Time: 80.07s, Average FPS: 24.98

    Average Tri/Sec: -9917193, Tri/Frame: -397043
    Recorded/Played Tris ratio: -2.31
!TimeDemo Run 1 Finished.
Play Time: 73.82s, Average FPS: 27.09

im running the demo @ 1280x1024 DX9 0xAA 16xAF with everything on high except shadows and post processing. they're on medium.

GPU Benchmark:

min: 15.42

average: 37. something

max: 60. something ...

now, i'm thinking thats pretty good for SLi "not" working considering i'm severly cpu bound!

what do you guys think???

also i'm sure the reason my minimum FPS is so low is because of my cpu .. but my average and max are better than ive seen with guys running a C2D and a single 8800GTS with the same settings. i just dunno
