You are right d1rx... But, I mean it figures, the nv30 will most likely be better then the 9700, so if you compare and get the best, you'll definitely get the nv30. I stated it wrong though you are right.. thanks for the correction.

Doesn't matter. Either way you are bogging down the system and cheating everyone. A big thanks to everyone who does this kind of thing.

There is supposed to be something wrong with it that the manufacturer's warrantee covers (not abuse), but they would probably let you do it regardless, with the right story.

Dispicable...

Since I just got my TI4600 about four or five months ago and it will play any game out right now,I think I will wait until next year and by then we should no what the best deals are and witch one is the fastest for the money you have to pay.Besides I think my next upgrade will be AMD XP2600 or the XP2800 if they go to a 333 bus.

I'm interested in how this works too---sounds like a heck of a deal. (I heard another guy mention it in the Beyond3d forums, but didn't go into detail).

people always abuse the system

are you sure that's how it's supposed to be? or is it really an exchange program? people have mentioned this before, but no one gave any further details.

I may get one. neither my GF4 Ti4200 or my 8500 can run every game I have today at max settings. Both have quirks when it comes to AA or AF. 8500 AA is more complete but too slow for x4 and they have issues at 45 deg with AF. GF4 AA does not do alpha (yes I still play CS and this looks horrible) and max aniso causes perfromance to drop. So for the games I have today I have to make trade offs. The R9700, according to the reviews will allow me the best of both NOW. The DX9+ that the nV30 have will be useless for me as it wont ever show up in the life time that I have the card. I also dont think the nV30 will have that much of a profromance gain over the R9700. Why wait for a 10% gain when I can spend 3 months actually playing games with the R9700. There is always something faster coming down the road.

Its a replacement plan. The people at CompUSA told me that I could take a sledgehammer to my card and get it replaced regardless.

I found out that I could go between companies when I first bought my VisionTek GeForce3... The fan on the CPU stopped working and it burned out my chip because I had it overclocked. When I took it back to CompUSA there were no GeForce3s in stock at all. They told me to just pick whatever I wanted and that it did not need to be the same card, or the same manufacturer... So, I got a Radeon 8500.

I hated the 8500, and went back the next day and got a Ti500 that they just got in stock... So, when the Ti4600s rolled around.. I took in my Ti500 and said I wanted to replace it with the Ti4600.
They simply said Ok... They didnt ask me if anything was broken. They didnt make me sit down and take some big test, they simply replaced the card... Im gonna do the same thing when the 9700 Pro hits the shelves. If they decide to tell me then that thats not how it works, then so be it. But Ive also done the same thing when going from Klipsch 4.1s to Klipsch 5.1s.

I had the replacement plan for those, and when the 5.1s came out, I went in and said I wanted the 5.1s.. They said ok, and all I had to do was cover the difference.

I think you hit the nail on the head ther, jbirney. It has been trade-offs. R8500 faster (but incomplete) AF- only time I ever could notice it (the 45 degree issue)was during flight sims- but I love flight sims. The FSAA on the Raddy looked grat, but what a performance hog- couldn't really use it.

Althought he FSAA on the Geforce was much faster than the Radeon, it was like blurville, USA. The aniso on the geforce was nice, but not as sharp as the R8500, although it did filter then entire screen, even 45 degree angles from the z-axis, but did so with a rather severe performace hit.

The R9700 gives the best of all worlds in the FSAA and A.F. dept.s. I'll probably wait until the NV30 is released, the see how many beans I have in the old bank acct. and but the cheapest one- both should be within 10% or so in terms of performance, but something tells me the NV30 will be selling for $400+, while the R9700 will be less than $300 by then, probably Feb.

I'm going to wait but it probably won't be for four months.
I suspect that we will probably getting some good info in a month or two on the NV30 and that may be enough to decide which one to get.

If we get info that says NV30 will be about the same as the R9700 but will be delayed until next year, then I'll probably go with the R9700.

If we get info saying the NV30 will totally smoke the R9700 and will be delayed then it will be a tougher choice.

Best case scenario is that we get info saying it will totally smoke the R9700 and it will make the Holiday deadline.

Either one you get is probably going to last a very long time in your system.

well it might be manufacturing tricks or methods from nvidia, but i do know that nvidia said the nv30 would be the biggest leap in graphics in 10 years. I think nvidia has something big up their sleeves. That is why i am going to wait for the nv30. I think we might see more than a 10 percent performance increase over the 9700. I might be wrong, but i feel something alot bigger then the radeon.

It doesn't matter now because I just had some expenses come up and I'm in no position to do anything at this time so I won't be abusing the system.

And for God's sake, it's spelled warranty. That drives me insane when people spell it wrong and I see it all the freaking time.

Well, if you feel that way, it's just your gut, not any logic. Nvidia has stated publicly that NV30 will be roughly 2-2.5X the performance of GeForce 4 Ti. But as *everyones* data have shown, Radeon 9700 is often ahead of the GeForce 4 Ti by that margin, which leads us to consider that Radeon 9700 and NV30 may be more evenly matched than previous top-end offerings from both chipmakers. Add to the mix that ATI has several products based on the Radeon 9700 core brewing, and that R9700 has support for DDR-II memory and is still running on 0.15-micron process technology, and you can see that NV30 will have its work cut out for it when it arrives....
