Default Todays game length - Value for money?

Recently I have seen a lot of posts expressing disappointment in the length of recent game titles.

Gamers do tend to whine a lot, more so pc gamers than consolers, probably the console guys didn't start out on a commodore 64 with a tape drive and don't know any better.

Admittedly your average AAA game title runs about $100 AUD here in Australia (although I just picked up COD4 for $80). So maybe you might consider that expensive and feel you have justification in complaining about a supposed lack of content.

I like to compare gaming with the cost of other entertainment mediums when considering value for money.

Your average latest hollywood movie runs about 1:30 - 2 hours and a movie ticket cost around $17 down where I live. So if a game only runs for 6 or 7 hours, lets say COD4 at $80, thats around $11.42 an hour, value for money?

Compared to the watch it once movie I think so.

Also that isn't taking into account less linear style of games where there is a lot of re-playability, I played through Far Cry a bunch of times for example.

Most movies are pretty bad nowadays anyway but you get 4 or 5 really good ones most years, I think it's the same for games so it makes for some interesting comparison.

What are your thoughts?

Hah. We pay 100AUD (90USD) for new release games. 120AUD for console. Not only are games shorter, but we get a huge premium tacked onto all software.

They do seem a tad short not like some older ones. Final Fantasy games tend to be very long, maybe because its a rpg. Maybe us canucks can order from the US since our dollar is doing so well. They are like $75.00 to $80.00 here.

I don't have a problem with the length. I would prefer a steller short game over a long drawn out one.

For example, I thought Doom3 was too long.

I'm starting to feel the same way.

Most recent games just aren't good enough (to me) to warrant the old "I WISH THIS GAME WAS LONGERR!!!!" posts.

Very very few games do that for me anymore.

Most of the great games I've played over the past couple years were perfect in length for the gameplay they offered.

Too many seem drawn out and get boring though. Bioshock is the biggest culprit this year. There is zero variation in the gameplay from the first level to Point Promethius and it just keeps making me do the same things over and over. I have yet to finish it because its just getting boring. They even took the fun out of blasting enemies because they can take 1200 points of damage before they die, so you basically just have to hold the shoot button, tap the "heal" button and use a few plasmids... rinse, repeat... 80 times per level... then watch a 30 second cut scene, then do the same thing vs an enemy with 500,000 hit points, then move to the next level where you do the same thing again...

The game is just too shallow for how long it is.

Multi player is where it's at. I've clocked up a good 80 hours on quake wars. that's $1/hour and falling fast. probably be abot 50c/hour when I'm done with it.

I do miss the logner FPS games... they were just good fun Bioshock for me was a perfect length. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was pretty long compaired to whats been out lately and I loved every hour of it. The original Half-Life was also perfect length / fun. Max Payne was by far one of the greatest stories and length games I had every played! The only reason I use X-Fire is to log the time I spend on a game... then I know if I got my moneys worth But I have also played some great short games... HL2 Ep2 was a ton of fun but was only 4 hours long at best.
