Thoughts?
I have come to the conclusion reviews have no clue how to score properly or are bought out/affected by manufactures hype too much.

Witcher is indeed better than Oblivion by at least 1 point (out of 10) IMO.

Timeshift is another great example. TS game should be getting solid 8's IMO, not the 7's and lower it's getting.

I know that I've been rather disappointed with some of the reviews from PC Gamer lately. Hopefully their new cheif editor will sort it out.

Thoughts?
Oblivion really doesn't look THAT great anymore. In fact it doesn't look very good at all without graphics mods. It was pretty impressive in early 2006 though.

The Witcher looks better all around, though the game world isn't as large or open and its a year and a half newer, so thats understandable.

As far as the scores, Oblivion was more streamlined and for most people, its the defining RPG for action\fps fans. If people don't normally like RPGs but enjoy FPSs, I'd recommend that they play Oblivion anyway. The game mechanics aren't perfect, but the game is pretty much just smooth sailing. You explore, do quests, kill stuff, get loot... and it all pretty much just works. It has very high production values and has voice acting from famous actors. All this definitely added to the scores. The thin NPCs, story and RPG elements aren't really that noticeable to most people unless they are long time fans of PC RPGs.

The Witcher's flaws are probably more apparent to most people though. Some of the dialog is pretty cheesy (mostly because of poor acting and translation problems) and the production values generally arent as high (ie, smaller levels, very little variation in NPCs, no big name actors). The quests are also quite a bit more complex and varied, so there is more room for them to screw up (I've had a few problems, others havent).

I can see why the "general public" would consider Oblivion a better game.

If you're someone who can appreciate an excellent CRPG experience though, The Witcher is in a completely different league.

The repetitive nature of destroying the gates in Oblivion was MIND NUMBINGLY BORING!!! I got to the point of warping in and just running up the tower as fast as I could without fighting and quickly closing the gate before the mob could reach me. It was SO lame and repetitive.

I haven't played Witcher yet but the reviews, screenshots and movies make it look like the better game to me...

A couple of posts ago someone also mentioned Timeshift which was under-scored. I do not know if my taste in games is changing or something else is going on, but recently I have not agreed with the general consensus of the so called professional reviewers. I like most people I suppose, consider myself to have good taste in games. Too many games are getting too high a score like EP2, Bioshock (not by much) COD4, Halo3. The one thing they have in common unlike The Witcher and to a lesser extent Timeshift is that they all had the huge hype machine treatment. I also feel that easily accessible good looking mediocrity gets rewarded as you only have to look at the movie industry to see this.

You know, I've noticed that too. It's gotten to the point of me thinking that there may be some sort of incentive given to the reviewers from the publisher's or even video card companies to tack a couple of extra (positive) points. I noticed that there isn't any kind of endorsment at the bottom of the Jericho Ad in PC Gamer for a video card company. I just wonder that if there had been, would it have scored a 77 instead of a 57.

"proffessional" reviewers review the games for money. So don't you think if Bungie or MS contacts him when they provide the game and say hey we would give you $2,000 just make halo3 sound like the best thing since sliced bread. Its money, they probably agree.

Remember magazines and gaming sites don't buy the games. Publisher sends them a copy, its not hard to contact them at that time.
