Default Re: Gears of War for PC Keeps crashing on Windows Vista x64?

This game seems to like XP much better than Vista 64. Using the in game DX10 AA under Vista, I was getting about 20 FPS in some heavy fights running at my monitors native res of 1920x1200. Using DX9 and Nhancer to force 4xAA under XP, I am getting around 45 FPS and am also able to run super sampled transparency AA which makes the game look stellar. So far I haven't been too impressed with DX10, the two big titles I have been looking forward to, GoW and Crysis, both seem to run better under DX9 with the so-called DX10 only features enabled.

Yes, DirectX 10 is doing nothing for us gamers right now. I'll be on XP x64 for awhile until Vista x64 runs better and more stable and faster with a non-beta SP1 to note. What about free multi-player on this game? I heard it was available?

just because vista has DX10 doesn't been you ahve to use it. You can run the game in DX9 with AA under vista as well. with same performance as xp.

It didn't work at all for me so I went back to XP Pro x64 and it's nice. I sure wish I would have been able to keep Vista x64 darn....

Ah, Vista strikes again. Glad to hear XP works fine, it always does.

As for online play - try creating an offline profile and use Hamachi (www.hamachi.cc). We have yet to test it but it looks like it should work for games. Hamachi sets up a secure LAN so you will be hosting a LAN game, not an internet game. People have to connect to your Hamachi network first then within the game choose LAN and should see your hosted game. On the hamachi forums people will setup games and post the u/p for their networks.

If you want connect straight up online with other random people you will need to use Live.

This is not a Vista exclusive ... I had this issue on XP too as I mentioned on page 1 ... ... and many others are having issues in XP too.

paddy, don't worry about him, he is nothing more then a troll.

I heard from 4 friends that bought this game. 3 on xp, one on vista. two people on xp had this problem because of live, they both bought halo2 and one also had shadowrun, during install gow live didn't update correctly causing some issues. one friend on xp still crashes for some reason. vista user also crashed, I uploaded all my hotfixes to his FTP, game runs now.

we can play online free. MS wants us to go gold on MS LIVE so what's the deal? Is there away to play multi-player free?
Online is free, you just need to sign up for a Live Silver account. You can't play on ranked servers is the only catch, that you do have to pay for.

Why don't I have any problems? I did notice something odd after installing it. It didn't give me any shortcut in either the start menu or the desktop. I had to go to the game directory to start it. Also shortly after installing it I installed a Live update that was linked on Blues News. I don't know if that did anything.

UPDATE: I finally got GOW to work in Windows Vista Ultimate x64
I had to go into the directory where the game is installed under the binaries
folder and right click on Start.exe under properties and then run under Admin.
It runs nice and hell DirectX 10 doesn't even seem to look any better or different then Direct X 9 for the game visuals. But, it does look a hell of alot better then the 360 console version 100% Now let's move onto the next thing I want to do.
I want the sound to sound better when shooting and just in general.
I also want to fix the wide screen issues. So please tell me in an easy to follow online instruction.....

1.) How to mod the sound for better quality

2.) How to fix the wide screen issue.

Note: I'm already running the game at 2560 x 1600 and it looks so eye-candy!
Do I need to do the fix for the widescreen issue still?
