Default 4349 Locks Deb3.0 (Woody) on GF4ti4200

I've installed the new drivers on a brand new pc with a new GF4 card.

Code:
OS: Debian/Gnu Linux 3.0 (Woody)
Kernel: 2.4.20
XFree: 4.1.0.1
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+
Motherboard: ASUS-V8X7N / KT400 chipset
RAM: 1 x 512MB Kingston PC2700 DDR-333
GF Card: inno3d GeForce 4 ti4200

Installation runs smoothly, and it compiles and install the nvidia.o kernel module without errors.

When I fire up X, it goes thru the steps/detections (See included output), and then try to switch to graphic mode, but instead I get a text-based mode filled with small color patches and random letters (a bit like piping a memory dump into an ANSI terminal back when that was fun :-)

The system then hangs without visible activity. Process viewers do though reveal a loadavg between 1.5 and 2 with no disk activity!

If I try to kill the process, the system just hangs, no matter what kind of kill I try (or even shutdown).

Commands that loads a new command shell, initialises, but never starts (like vi).

Since im tired of running e2fsck on a 80GB harddrive everytime I try something new to solve this, I was hoping you might have a pointer to where to look for the solution.

This is a known problem with the KT400 chipset. There are two workarounds:

1) Disable AGP. You can do this by adding
Code:
Option "NvAgp" "0"
to the Device section of your XF86Config file.

2) Try the workaround posted in http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...&threadid=9927
