As long as the shipping product has fully functional drivers in the box, I don't think the delay will be too big of a problem. Unfortunate, yes; deal-breaker, we'll find out when the cards reach shelves.

I think it's opportunity for nVidia. If they can officially announce their product soon, and I mean very soon, it could kick ATI where it hurts.

Now as to whether or not nVidia could do this, I dunno.

It depends who you believe for your sources of information. Tom's Hardware says Nvidia won't be able to get it out the door before 2003. If that's true, then it doesn't matter if the Radeon 9700 is a few weeks, as it will have about 4 months to itself.

does that conclusion come from insider information or from pure speculation?

they'll get it out the door for sure, they have no choice. the question is not if, but how limited will the quantities be.

Default A little more info about the 9700

I was at my local Best Buy this afternoon and have a bit more info on the 9700. They had a dummy box out that said they were accepting pre-orders for the card. The expect the 9700 Pro to be available for sale on Sept. 8 at a price of $399.99. With $10 down you can guarantee a 9700 for yourself.

Damn Ed, you live at that store!

That date sounds a bit better than the one reported earlier (by the [H]), hope they stick to it, it's gonna be a real nice card!

Information at the [H] direct from ATi now states that they will not be late and the chips and cards will be shipped to vendors within their 30 days set forth. It seems to be more of the matter of resellers getting them through their channels and onto the shelves, not an ATi problem.

Exactly Spiritwalker. ATI has said they are shipping on time, Im sure some stores will have them earlier than others.

I am very skeptical that any delay now is related to driver issues. I mean, you can just download the newest drivers off the internet. Why would they hold back shipping the card if the driver wasn't "perfect"? Forget the fact that a good fraction of people will never bother to update.

But this practice isn't unusual. Look at the Diablo 2 Expansion. If you bought the expansion something like 3 days after the release, they had already significantly altered it with a new version to be downloaded off battle.net. They won't hold the card for driver issues.
