Ubuntu (gutsy)
(dual booting to winxp) GeForce 5200fx (dsub) Westy LCM-22w2 (22" flat panel) I updated from feisty to gutsy; flawless installation, everything is running great... EXCEPT: When X launches (after the login screen) and sets the rez to 1680 x 1050, the display shifts appx 2" to the right, leaving a black stripe down the left side of the screen. I can poke the 'auto adjust' button on the OSD and make it all better, but then everything else (login screen, everything in winXP) is shifted left. This only happens on gutsy at 1680 mode, all other resolutions are fine. This only started happening with gutsy; never saw it at all in feisty or in windoze. The ubuntu forums are not so helpful; the 'auto adjust' seems to be the answer of the day. |

how about running nvidia-bug-report.sh and post the results? Like it is said in sticky-post?
Or for starters, remove all 'Modeline' and all 'Modes' entries from your xorg.conf and retry. Maybe X tries to do the right thing and ubuntu's xorg.conf forces the wrong one. |

no need to apologize. But if you don't post the resulting log, most people won't even bother thinking about your problem

OK... here it is...
Just noticed... The Ubuntu logo, according to the monitor's OSD, is 1024x768x60Hz (centered properly) The login screen is 1680x1050x60Hz (centered properly) after logging in, the screen flickers, and (also according to the OSD), is 1680x1050x60Hz (shifted 3" right) Don't know if that helps? |

After commenting out the "Modes" in xorg.conf and doing a full power-down reboot, the login screen AND the desktop are both shifted to the right (it was just the desktop, not the login screen)

I'm willing to try...
iirc, I've updated it once, with no change in this issue. I only mention that because I was running Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty) on this machine, and it was not doing this... only when I made the jump to 7.10 Beta, and I was hoping it was just a beta-bug. But, I will try 169.04 in a few minutes! |

Well, driver 169.04 is installed, no change.
I had an issue installing, and can't get around it... sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop to stop the X server, but the installer tells me it's still running. So I did init 1 The installer complains about runlevel1, and suggests runlevel 3. So I did init 3 Which took me back to the (GUI) login screen, and the installer now complains that the X server is running. So I ended up installing it in runlevel 1, and it appeared to go fine after that. But... no joy on the shifted display. ![]() |

It sounds like your modetimings are slightly different in Windows and in Linux.
Take a look at: http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/XFree86-Video-Timings-HOWTO/ , specifically: http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/XFree86-Vid...es.html#AEN437 |

I manually added a 'Modeline' to the 'Monitor' section of xorg.conf, but the only change I see from changing the hsyncstart and hsyncend values is in the login screen; the desktop is still where it was. |
