Default NVdia & Xorg

I installed my first Solaris (5.11, Nevada) x86 laptop with an NVida GF5600 (works fine) and therefore I have a question about Nvidia/Xorg.
When I look in /etc/X11 I see a file .xorg.conf (look at the dot in front of xorg).
Is it normal to have xorg.conf as a dotfile, or should I remove it?
Are there any other specific configuration files for the NVidia card?

Although the Gnome screen resolution applet says I have a resolution of 1024x768, it visually appears as if it is a 800x600. How can I check this in another way?
Can I somehow "force" the resolution to be 1024x768 or higher?

Thanks, Algy
