Hi I have installed new beta release 169.04 for ubuntu gutsy gibbon, I previously had installed 100.14.19 driver. So after installed, apparently with no problems the gdm did'nt start. and after I check the installer log i found this

I have not found how to fix it "this kernel module has the version 100.14.19."
I though the installer would compile the new kernel module so it would not give this problem. Please help me I had a 7300LE so the 100.14.19 driver freeze the gdm almost every 2 hours

This sounds like a known problem with Ubuntu's driver packages. Please see Ubuntu's documentation or support forum for instructions on how to properly remove the Ubuntu packages before installing the 169.04 driver.

I had the same problem. It's pretty easy to fix. When you install the 169 driver, the old driver is not removed. Go to /lib/modules/ directory and search for nvidia.ko. You should find 2 drivers. Remove the smaller driver. It's roughly half the size of the newer driver.

I knew the problem was that. but now its too late to try it. I just formatted the Linux partition and installed again, now with this virgin installation the driver did not give any problem after installation. In fact I'm using right now to test the stability on a 7300LE video card.

But thanks anyway I think the problem will appear again when I have to update to the stable release of the driver.
I'll save your answer some place to take in count.

hi i'm on amd64 gutsy and have this same api mismatch problem after installing the beta. thing is i need this beta driver as my system locks up with shipped stable driver as i have 7300 nvidia card, which has lots of stability problems.

anyway i really need to install the beta driver but can't get past this api mismatch. i tried looking for nvidia.ko to delete the smaller one or whatever but i only have one...

please if anyone can help. thanks.

.../volatile/nvidia.ko is the one to delete. I fixed this by copying the beta driver from .../kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko as .../volatile/nvidia_new.ko, since the restricted drivers manager uses nvidia_new.ko when the 1xx.xx.xx series of the Nvidia drivers is needed.

The better solution is to disable it properly in the /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common and set DISABLED_MODULES="nv". It'll save you the trouble when the restricted driver gets updated sometime in the future,
