Default 8800GT is it really supported by 169.04 or not? [FIXED by purging nvidia-glx!]

Hi there, I have bought 8800GT about 2 weeks ago and been running it in vesa mode due to lack of drivers. I have recently attempted to install beta driver (anything is better than vesa), and miserably failed (actually failed a few times).
I am using KUBUNTU 7.10. I have made post on the issue on ubuntuforums.org (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=596954).

yeah same problem (partial Xorg.0.log):
Code:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please consult the NVIDIA README for details.

first it complained about not existence of /sbin/lrm-video I touched it. Then it complained about access denied on that file, chmod it. now it complains about not being able to find /dev/nvidiactl (which is there).

169.04 theoretically should support my video card but for some reasons it does not work.

Can some one post work around, please.
I have attached relevant log files.
Can some please help me?

Maybe because of this????

Section "Device"
Identifier "nVidia Corporation NVIDIA Default Card"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection

This should be

Driver "nvidia"

I put that there to make it work I am not that stupid.
It does not work when "nvidia" is in there, I generated nvidia bug report when I was in X afterwards.

The nvidia-bug-report.log file does not capture the problem; please regenerate it right after the problem has reproduced.

that looks like a ubuntu problem with its scripts, make sure that the nvidia driver is uninstalled using their package manager then install from the driver from nvidia's site, that should prevent the ubuntu scripts from running that mess up the install

Thanks! I had these repository drivers unninstalled, but they left something over , as I decided to install them back and purge uninstall.
Then I reinstalled nvidia driver and everything works OK.

Thank you very much.
