Default nvidia 100.14.19 + ipw3945: system freezes [HP Notebooks].

I have an HP pavilion dv5194ea. I am experiencing random system freeze expecially when at some distance from the AP (about 10-15 m). In some cases it freezes for a couple of seconds and the wireless network card became unusable (I have to reboot the system), but most of the times the system becames totally unusable: the laptop screen goes black and it does not respond to any command, so it is necessary to hard reboot it. I can see a log message like this when I recover from a crash:

I don't know if this is an ipw3945 or an nvidia driver issue. The freeze always starts with an Xid message from the nvidia driver then ipw3945 crashes. Sometimes the psmouse.c module crashes too.

Package versions:

ipw3945: 1.2.0
ipw3945-ucode: 1.14.2
ipw3945d: 1.7.22-r4
nvidia-driver: 100.14.19
kernel: 2.6.22-gentoo-r5

I have already tried all the kernel cheats suggested here and I am running the latest BIOS flash image from HP (updated to solve a precedent issue with the nvidia card).

As the system becames really unstable it is impossible to run the nvidia-bug-report tool when it freezes and, as network goes down too, I couldn't try to launch it via ssh.

I think that all other relevant informations are inside the nvidia-bug-report.

Thanks in advance for your help.

-------- PS ----------

I have opened a bug report on the bug tracker of the ipw3945 too:

The output that you've provided isn't suggesting that the nvidia driver is related to the instability.

Thanks for the reply.

Every time I have an NVRM: Xid ... L1 -> L0 log message my sistems crashes. Most of the time an hard reboot is necesarry. It seems that this message is somehow linked to some action which causes the ipw3945 module to crash...

This was also happening with the 100.14.11 and 100.14.09 drivers.

Maybe this is not an nvidia bug, but its driver is linked with the crashes...

Have you verified whether you're using the latest BIOS?
Does this problem persist with a kernel.org kernel as well?
Are you using the latest released ipw3945 code/bits?

The kernel output shows that the system is crashing in the ipw3945 driver's module initialization routine. The Xid messages suggest that there are other problems, but the crash itself doesn't appear to be caused by the NVIDIA graphics driver.

I run the IPW3945 in a Dell Inspiron E1705/9400 with a GeForce Go 7900 GS. I've had no problems with it in the 10 months I've owned it. I do note that some of my team have HP Pavilion laptops and have intermittent hangs with it - primarily, judging from other forums, due to IRQ management. That might be your problem rather than the NVidia driver and hardware as such.

This problem appeared when I updated my BIOS to its latest version to solve another issue. This happens not very often so the computer is still usable most of the time, but probably there is a problem with the BIOS or something, because I am not the only one with issues with NVIDIA + ipw3945 on a Pavilion system:

http://bughost.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1476

I have updated to 2.6.22-gentoo-r8 and will test this (I have to wait some time to see if something happens...). Meanwhile I will try to document myself for the IRQ managment stuff and will wait for answeres on the ipw3945 bug tracker (it's possible that the problem is on their side).

Thanks again for your help.

You may want to upgrade to ipw3945 1.2.2. I would get kernel stack traces like this using 1.2.0 after a day or two and I've been running 1.2.2 for months now without any problems. Several ipw3945 driver crashes were fixed between 1.2.0 and 1.2.2.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am installing them now. I have no other choice as the iwlwifi driver is still too unstable and I can't get my card to work with ndiswrapper (I even tried different kernel patches, but was useless).

Default Re: nvidia 100.14.19 + ipw3945: system freezes [seems not NVIDIA related]

Update.

I am running ipw3945-1.2.2 now. I am still experiencing crashes (system freezes and I have to push the power button until it halts), but I can't get a clear log message about it: there is no message at the time of the crashes...

I had some Xid message like the ones from the old crashes, but they seems to be unrelated to the new crashes. So it really looks like that this is not an nvidia issue...

you appear to be having almost the exact same problem as me! I too have an HP laptop with ipw3945 driver & nvidia xid lockups. Please let me know if you develop any solution. My problem occurs nearly 0% of the time unless I use desktop compositing via beryl or compiz (then its produceable almost always within 24 hours of use).

irqpoll, noapic, nolapic, all don't work. IIRC, even nosmp doesn't fix the problem, though I may have to retest that. I remember trying just about everything mentioned on these forums at least once. Do the errors still happen for you if the ipw3945 driver is not loaded?

Thinking it was a kernel irq issue, I switched my latest kernel to tickless to greatly reduce the number of interrupts, though the stability level remains the same.

It seems to be the very same issue! I don't know if it's something in composite or is just that I am using opengl graphic: I don't use any game or graphical apps so I don't know if this issue occurs even without beryl, but while using some 3d intensive app. Did you try this?

I have used my computer for about 12 hours without any issue when I tested it without ipw3945, but did not test it more as I wanted to try shaundennie's suggestion and was hoping to get a better trace to help the devs to fix this.

I have blacklisted ipw3945 now and I will try to see how much uptime I can do without a crash.

Same here. I am tickless now.

I have found this in my dmesg:

ACPI: BIOS bug: multiple APIC/MADT found, using 0
ACPI: If "acpi_apic_instance=2" works better, notify linux-acpi@vger.kernel.org

this problem started when I updated my BIOS to solve the freezing X with moving cursor issue, maybe it's a sort of bug in the HP BIOS which is exposed by a combination of NVIDIA and ipw3945 drivers...

I will post here again if I find out something.
