I'm breaking my vow and may be going back to playing WOW on a small scale in the evening and weekends casually with a few friends who live back home. What would you recommend as the best class and trades to go for when I'm just looking for a bit of fun with pvp with friends? Figured I should ask since I've not played in 2 years.

If I remember correctly you were a warrior before, if you're interested in leveling another one, warriors are very powerful in PvP with a good group, and I know you already know how to tank and that's always useful. If you want to try something different, shaman and pallies are very strong PvP healers. If you want to go the FotM route, roll a warlock or hunter. Incredibly easy leveling and very strong in PvP either solo or with a group. DPS-wise, rogues are the best single-target DPSers currently and are very strong in PvP with a Hemo/Combat mace build (Mutilate is pretty decent still too). Mages are a ton of fun to play of course and offer fantastic damage as well as crowd control (which is in high demand for 70 heroic instances). Priests are versatile as either damage/support (shadow) or healers with a ton of utility (holy).
Profession-wise, mining and herbalism are the best money-making gathering professions (though it's a pain to have both at the same time, take mining+skinning or herbalism+skinning). Keep in mind your end-game profession goal when picking your gathering profession. If you want to pick a crafting profession early on, be aware that it will drain your cash flow which may make it difficult to get your mount at 40 (Alchemy is exempt from this). Enchanting is very expensive and should really be started much later in the game once you are able to farm instances for the greens you'll need to disenchant. Tailoring is very potent for casters near the end-game but you won't find a lot of use for the tailoring epic sets in PvP (for the most part). Hope that helps. Really every class offers something great so it's hard to recommend a specific one. Do you have an idea what you want to do?

I was thinking rogue since it gives me the chance to be a bit sneaky in the game too, you remember right, I played a dw fury warrior before I left but was geared for massive pve damage. PVP wise I ended up having to rely on having a healer at hand which is a bit restricting. My two friends play a druid and a priest so I figure having a bit of dps hidden away in the background in case someone tries to gank em could be handy.

Rogue's a good way to go then. Rogues have some of the best talent trees (in other words, the trees actually work like they should) and are a fun class to play. I'm actually starting up a rogue alt later today.

Well I figure I started with a warrior when the game first came out and the class was broken, when I left the class had been broken again so I have no faith the class will be working when I go back to WOW.

Oh no warriors are very functional right now. Arms warriors in PvP with a healer are murder factories, Fury warriors in PvE can almost match rogues in damage, and Protection tanks are the best in the game for basically every situation. Warriors are complained about nearly as much as Warlocks for being overpowered. The situation is very much the opposite of what it used to be.

rogue, warriors, warlocks are all good pve and pvp classes. In demand tends to be warriors, priest, and healing versions of druids and shaman.

Not just going for the battlegrounds, going on a pvp server and get up to 70 as soon as I can so we can kick around bullying people.
