Default 169.04 BUG: The 7 series multi core bug still exsists.

Just been using your new 169.04 driver, It wasn't long(4 hours) and the black screen flicker happened again. I suspect my system will be locking up as it was previously too.

It's hard to understand how this bug can go on for so long!

Just so you know starting compiz as below has no effect in helping.

Code:
compiz --replace --indirect-rendering --loose-binding

I think you're confusing the out of memory handling problem that earlier drivers had that many people refer to as a "black window" with some other problem. Can you please describe in more detail what you mean by "black screen flicker"?

The first post under problem description describes it perfectly:

Here's another thread where I and others have posted:

Alt+Ctrl+F1 then Alt+Ctrl+F7 resolved it just now so it's the same bug. I got this from the second link I provided, on the second page, from an Ubuntu developer that states outright that it's your bug. http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...9&postcount=18

I have a 7950GT on a Core 2 Duo and have used every 100 series driver. I've run a good amount of 3D applications (including Compiz) without seeing a lockup.

Now, the "black flash" is sometimes due to the switching between 2D and 3D clockspeeds. Sometimes you'll see it, other times you won't. I'm pretty sure it's intended to do that.

I'm positive you are seeing the clockspeed change because when you use Compiz you are using the 3D engine of the card, and when it needs more power the card will jump from 2D to 3D speeds -- causing a "black flash".

I wasn't trying to find out whether it was a bug or not. Nvidia have already admitted that it is a bug in their driver. Did you not read anything at the Ubuntu forums? Not even the first post? You're quite wrong in everything you've said, there wasn't much consideration in your reasoning...

Ok onto the bug. It only got worse installing the 169.04 with the flashes being much more consistent, every half a minute or so. However earlier yesterday I installed XGL(-server) through Synaptic to try resolve this bug by not using nvidia's AIXGL. Restarting my system I had a glitch after logging in where a full screen single coloured layer covered everything except the mouse and flame effect on menus when closing. I then rebooted, logged in in safe mode and removed removed XGL. I'm back on AIXGL and I haven't had a single problem as yet (9 hours).

This has to be a big hint in resolving this. Installing XGL must have configured something that was mis-configured with nvidia's AIXGL, unless of course the screen flashes and lock-ups return. I will report back in another 24hours.

I still haven't had the constant screen flickering but just now I did have a single full screen flicker and gnome locked up. The mouse worked as usual and I could here people signing into Skype.

Flashes are back, as per the provided threads restarting the system temporarily resolves it... 3 months I've had this bug, that's just slack...

Well the frequent flashes turned into frequent complete system lock ups that could only be resolved by hard resetting. I have been on NV for the last day or so with no flashes or lock-ups at all. I see this problem is very common which is great because it might finally be fixed!

Oh so I wasn't going crazy... I have a 7300 in my C2D laptop, and in Linux the screen would flicker every so often, but never in Windows. I read that this latest beta was supposed to fix it, will keep an eye out for the flicker...
