Default 169.04 works but..

I have two Inno3d GeForce 8800GT 512MB(SLI) I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu Gusty Gibbon and the problem is that X keeps going back to the generic vesa driver whenever I reboot, so i'm greeted by poor grahics and a low resolution . NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.04-pkg2 installs successfully and works flawlessly and I allow it's x-config utility to edit xorg.conf, it all seems to be correct. What could be wrong? I'm tired of having to reinstall it every time I boot. I really want to preserve and use the preferable configuration.

Thanks in advance

Have you uninstalled and removed all the bits related to the stock nVidia package of Ubuntu?. I suspect that was caused by the Restricted Driver Manager that your xorg.conf got replaced.

Thanks for replying.

No I have not, I'll give that a try. What are they named? all the nvidia packages? I doubt they were installed in the first place.

This is the issue:
You can edit the /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common configuration file and disable the NVIDIA linux-restricted kernel modules (nvidia, nvidia_legacy) via:

DISABLED_MODULES="" ----------change to:

DISABLED_MODULES="nv"

-----Under Gutsy, unless you disable that 'nv' every time you reboot it will use that instead of the binaries.

Hes having the same problem im having, cant get it to load the glx package even after doing all of the compatibility things in the post. Why wont it use it? If you install the old .19 nvidia-glx-new package it loads fine but no 3d accel. uninstall and your back to his error.
