Default Re: New 360 Dashboard Update = Awesome!

Few questions now that xbox 360 can be useful for multimedia users.

Back in May i bought 360 had the system for about 3 weeks, in that time i played about 3-4 hours of games on it.

Only game that I would play on 360 would be either racing or fighting. Not gonna waste my time with shooters I have PC for that. Multimedia functions compared to XBMC were pathetic. Now after this fall update, how much has really changed?

1) 360 can play all (or most) Divx/Xvid files?

2) Is there anyway for MKV(720/1080p) files to play? x264 video, audio either AC3 or OGG

3) Can wide JPG images be used as thumbnails?

4) Does WMP11 has to be used? PC with all media doesn't have WMP11, with XBMC i just used network shares (SMB)

5) Can media files be rewind, forward, change aspect ratio?

6) can media files be zoomed? 4:3 video with top and bottom cut-off to fit 16:9 screen?

Engadget says yes.

You will have to repackage the MKV to a avi or wmv container, ac3 is supported, ogg is not. (ie: Transcode)

Thumbnails have a max size of 512k, no idea if there are height/width constraints (but I doubt it).

You cannot simply browse network shares, they must be provided by a service that the 360 can use, be it: WMP11, Windows Home Server, Windows Media Center, or Windows Media Connect (if you can find it). As a side note, you don't need to leave WMP11 running once you have identified the media you want to share.

yes

yes, but I only know how to do it with the remote. Hit 'info' which brings up a menu, then go down two options (forgot the name), and you can cycle through them.

Wonder if Server 2008 will work. I'm running that now on my second pc, and probably will keep running it till April. When ever the license expires.

Are you running the slimmed down no-gui version of 2008 or with a gui? If you have the gui, you should be able to install windows media player 11 on it.

I considered running server 2008, but had been beta testing WHS since the start of the year and I have too much data in the mix to test 2008 on that machine. With the delivery of my highpoint rocket 2 channel ata133 pci card shortly, I should be able to push my storage space to just below two terrabytes without having to buy any new drives.

After the update, my 360 froze about 3 times. I had to reset alot of times before it stopped. As for the dashboard, I don't notice any difference in speed. It's takes WAAY too long to add someone as a friend when I'm in a game.

Still no support for 16:10 monitors... WTF Microsoft! How hard is to add a few more resolutions for people who are stuck with 1440x900 or 1600x1000 monitors ?

Did someone publicly ask MS to add this? I remeber reading Major Nelson's blog a while back when he was asking for suggetions for the next update and didn't see this one. Maybe you should send kind email to Major Nelson asking for the feature.

I remeber that a larger number of resolutions was promised in the past but never implemented. Only a couple of resolutions (1366x768 and 1920x1080 both mainly used by TVs) were added in all these years during updates.

post sniped.

I will say that if it is such a big deal, all who want it should go to the right channels and ask for it instead of complaining here.

Everyone seems to be saying that this has improved the dashboard performance but for some reason it now takes a good 15-20 secs for my profile to log in and then the XBOX Live blade to load.
