Did DX9.0 have such a rocky start?

My introduction to DX9 was late with an ATi 9800XT. T'was smooth sailing for me. This is the first time I've been on the edge with a video card that (when I got it) supported something not even out.

Lost Planet and Hellgate London are the only games that are worth playing in DX10 mode IMO. The first runs better in DX10 than DX9 and the second looks a bit better (I love the DOF and smoke effects in this game), with a big performance hit, but it's worth for me because frame rate is very high.

DX10 it's the obvious evolution over DX9 like Windows Vista over XP, but 2007 has not been the great year Microsoft would have liked for both. Lost Planet shows that DX10 does not make games run slower, but poor coding does, and it seems developers have yet to learn a lot. And Vista is slowly becoming a better OS with every patch, so the future is there.

It's not here, but it will.

BTW DX9 first days with Half Life 2 were hard too, game speed was cut in half in DX9 vs DX8, so the story repeats.

Half-Life 2 came out awhile after DX9 was new and I didn't notice any difference between DX8 and 9 apart from the fact 9 looked much better.

Max Payne 2 was a early DX9 title wasn't it? Though it ran great on everything...

Oh I lied in my other post. My 6800GT was the first time I was bleeding edge, as I had it before the DX9.0c release, which i recall was a bit of a mess. HDR and SM3.0 killed performance in Chaos Theory same for Soft Shadows in Riddick

how about WIC COH+EXP and well there is at least some games i think benbefit fropm DX10 then Vista sinīt really ready to take over XP as a gaming platform yet so i think DX10 with vista is a samll fiasko.

DX11 with whatever that windows is called might hit it on spot

Dont forget Devil May Cry 4 which is indeed coming to PC.

& yep Max Payne 2 did use SM2.0 (DX9) albeit lightly which explains the good performance on all cards back then (even the FX series) .. the first game to use DX9 truly is FarCry IMO.

Crysis wasnt a persuasive DX10 game because most features were unlocked in DX9. fortunately for Crytek that didnt matter as CE2 is a strong (DX9) engine by default.

Max Payne 2 was dx8.

DX9 was scarce, it was released in 2002, tomb raider angel of darkness and one flight-fighter game had dx9 in 02 - 2003 had one game, Halo, which used one function of dx9, ps2.0

It wasn't until 2004 when farcry and hl2 hit the dx9 was really put out there.

And for the record, half-life 2's frames were only cut in dx9 mode if you had an fx card at the time. dx9 ati cards and the g6 series ate the game up.

I personally feel dx10 was rushed. DX9 never came in through a patch, later in a game.

Either design the game around the api or dont, patches are useless, they aren't going to offer many new features.

dx10 wont be used right for another year. 2009 before it goes anywhere, ESPECIALLY since consoles do dx9.

To be honest, dx10 is probably the most useless api update in the history of dx, virtually everything in it can be done in dx9. I don't expect it to live long and I think dx11 is where the truly "next great visuals" lay.

disappointed, ue3 shows some benefits (bioshock water, AA, alpha blended particles) but the performance loss is pretty crazy. Gears for me runs slower but I get a lot less stuttering in dx9 mode which I have no idea why. I also don't know why they don't let us customize the AA level in gears, 4aa hurts most gpus, 2aa would be a good trade.
