Default Power outage risks?

I was just wondering about the risks of power outage due to storms and such.

If using a UPS for your computer and Monitor, are you really safe from spikes and other risks of power outage?

What about other cables connected to the computer, like ethernet/usb from modem and signal cable from the speaker system to the audio card (the speaker system's power cable connected to a wall socket)?

Was just wondering about that, thanks
