Default glxinfo doesn't detect direct rendering

Hello everybody,

I have a notebook with a Geforce 8600 M GS card and there is a strange problem when I run glxinfo. It returns: "direct rendering: no". However, the nvidia-settings returns "direct rendering: yes". Here is the full output of glxinfo:

I am using Gentoo Linux 64 bits on an Intel Core2 Duo with kernel 2.6.23.12 and compiz runs without problems. So I guess that glxinfo doesn't detect direct rendering correctly. Furthermore, glxgears gives around 3000 FPS when compiz is loaded and around 5000 FPS when it is not.

Can anybody explain what's happening ?

When you use compiz you are using indirect rendering. There is nothing wrong with that and it is required for compiz. Indirect rendering doesn't mean software rendering (though in some cases it does mean it, like in case of Mesa).

Indeed, compiz is not a good way to tell whether direct rendering is enabled or not. I am not using XGL. I rather use the classic xorg server (version 1.3) provided by Gentoo.

However, it remains true that glxinfo doesn't detect direct rendering while the NVidia Settings tool detect direct rendering. Can somebody explain that ? You can find the Xorg log file in attachment.
