Default Xbox 360 Ultimate

Weíve already had the Xbox 360 Premium and Elite. Both are, of course, fine gaming machines with the best games catalogue in the next-gen field. But come autumn 2008, we reckon both will be rendered obsolete by the Ultimate.

This PS3-killer will benefit from almost three years of Xbox development, featuring 1080p HDMI output, built-in Wi-Fi, hi-def audio output, cooler 65nm hardware architecture and a near-silent fan.

Itíll also have the ability to make the most of the by-then established Xbox IPTV service, which will mean recording TV shows to its vast 320GB hard disk and watching live TV shows via your broadband provider.

But the piece de resistance? Itíll have a built-in HD DVD drive. Let Round 12 with the PS3 commence...

By that time HD-DVD drives will be a quarter of the price they are now, and stand-alone players will be free with every copy of Terminator 4

Its a good model though to drip drip the hardware to the consumer at the same price even though the cost has fallen.
A price increase would be a rip-off though.

I miss the good ole days, when a console stayed the same for 5 years - which is what made it appealing over pc's.

If you're gonna have 17 new options every 6 months regarding consoles, there's not much point leaving pc gaming (granted your tired of all the upgrading)

Did MS say the 360 would NEVER have a builtin HDDVD drive? Then again I think they said it would NEVER have HDMI. ::

QFT. If anything this trend will encourage people to adopt late.

Sony did it better. Reward the early adopters by sticking the late adopters with a nerfed system. LOL

The problem is consoles are becoming more PC like every generation and are requiring more than your average TV to display on. They also require broadband connection for all the extras. This is all topped off by Sony and Microsoft battling for not only console supremacy, but also the HD format war.

I am glad consoles have came this far and I love seeing the progress. I was only a console fan for a while before I got back into gaming PCs a few years ago (about 1991-1999). After I got back into PC gaming, consoles became a joke mainly because of the slow systems and poor graphics. With the recent generation of HD gaming, it's making a comeback bigger than ever. The only thing I do really miss from back in the day are arcades. I haven't seen a decent one in many years.

It seems like a good media box product, which IPTV is missing.

Microsoft are on to something with it.

Right now I think this is all speculation:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/01/x...rive-as-usual/

MS has always denied they'd do it because they don't want to force the HD-DVD format down the throats of their 360 buyers. I guess we'll find out for sure if this is just a rumor next week at CES.
