Default 8800GT 169.07 fan 100% loud SL10.2

Got Suse 10.2 installed.
MSI NX8800GT - latest nvidia linux driver (169.07)
MSI K9 SLI Platinum

everythings running nice, but my fan is constantly running at 100% (never, never slows down (under linux)). This is very loud!
On Windows XP everythings OK.

Am I able to control the fan speed of my gpu under linux?

thats a known issue.
See: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=104713
You can use nvclock cvs to control your fanspeed.

I just did the same a second ago, is it safe? will the fan speed up if it gets to hot?

The 8800GT (and other highend nvidia cards) contain an external temperature sensor / fan controller. This fan controller changes the fanspeed depending on the temperature (to be exact it is configured from within the video bios by your vendor). For some reason nvidia adjusted some of the parameters in 169.07 which made it very loud.

I'm curious if there's a hardware power trip if the GPU gets too hot, similar to what they implemented on mobos and CPUs years ago. It has to be really high with the new cards because damn they get hot!

Hi,

I can't seem to install nvclock 0.8 beta 3. Irrespective of whether I run the autogen, configure and make commants as root (using 'sudo') or as myself, I get the following errors:

You need to install x11 headers, the package depends on the distribution you use.

Thanks for the info.

Ok, I installed the "libx11-dev" package and the make step went a little further, but still complains about missing header-files:

Any idea in which package are the extensions found? Sorry, I'm running Ubuntu 7.10!

On my gentoo machine here it's part of the x11-proto/xextproto package. I'm not sure how that is represented in your distribution though. Hopefully this will help you find it.

for those using Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 or other versions of Ubuntu, there is a third party installation program called "Envy" that works flawlessly IF your card is seen by the program (some cards are not yet supported fully) A VERY simple program that I have used on 3 machines thus far and it sets the fans to only speed up on LOAD. BUT, as mentioned, an adjacent slot fan works wonders. I have one box so equipped and the fan NEVER speeds up as it gets adequate cooling!
