I was thinking this stalemate would last a few more years, but I'm not buying a $180 player that may be relegated to upconverting standard DVDs in 12-18 months with no new content being sold. Now I'm going to wait and see how this all shakes out.

I'm bummed; I was really looking forward to using that player..
Just refuse it and Amazon will give a credit once it arrives back.

At 10 free movies the player was free, and you have your movies. There are 400 other titles available. I'd say you're fine. Universal and Paramount are also still HD DVD exclusive.

Every new year the BDA proclaims victory, here we are again.

And how long do you think Universal and Paramount will stay HD DVD exclusive? HD DVD has been declared dead too many times now, but this time a much larger fraction of the HDM userbase agrees that the Warner/New Line Cinema move is very likely the deadly blow to HD DVD.

I know that; the deal was a good one. That's why I went for it.

The problem is the outcome is much more up in the air than it was a week ago, IMO. I was willing to jump into the fray when I felt that things were at a stalemate that would go on for years, perhaps indefinitely. Now I don't feel that way anymore. It may, but it's much more in question in my mind than it was before. I'm just not willing to make the investment into the product under these circumstances. I'm much more concerned about the future than the present regarding this. I want my purchase to be fully utilized for years. At this time, I don't feel confident that the HD-DVD player will be. Time will tell.

Maybe in 2 years when I finish my basement and invest in a nicer HT setup things will have settled by then. Until then, maybe I'll buy a decent upconverting player for less $$$ as a band-aid.

Maybe try the just announced today Samsung 5500? It may be the first decent combo player. $599 list, probably mid 400's street.

Toshiba's CES press conference:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/06/l...ss-conference/

Not much about HD-DVD execpt strong Q4 unit sales. There's no Q&A session after that. Hmm.

because as itterated before, universal and paramount are losing sooo much money from this 1% of the market they'll have to jump on bd bandwagon by february. speculation is that universal and paramount renew contracts in a year and half with hddvd so that neither format catches on.

2007 HD DVD and Blu-ray unit sales combined:

8 million

2007 DVD unit sales:

800 million

This "War" isn't as big a deal to the studios as people thing. We are a niche market.

At those prices, the WAF is nil.

It looks impressive. I'd pick up if it hit $400 in 6 or so months.

It doesn't seem to be 2.0, is the only reason I won't try it. I think Blu-ray needs to catchup to HD DVD and 2.0 is the 1st sign of that.
