Default Total lockup on Asus A7V266

I have been trying to get the latest 4139 drivers working on my computer to no avail. Below are my details:

VIDEO: GeForce 3 (made by visiontek)
CTX CRT Monitor
AMD Athlon XP 1700+

Here's what happens. I can compile the driver and it loads successfully. However, when I type "startx" I get a completely black screen. I have let it sit for hours, and nothing happens. I can still ping my computer from other computers on the network, but I cannot switch to any other virtual terminals nor can I do a "ctrl - alt - backspace" to end X. The only thing I can do is reboot my computer. I have tried disabling AGP and that also does not work.

Please advise if you can help me figure this out.
