Default Modeline problems.

Hi all, I wanna use this modeline in my xorg.conf as i have a vga to scart cable and want to output to a PAL CRT TV.

Modeline "720x576pali" 13.88 720 742 808 888 576 580 583 625 -hsync -vsync interlace

Problem is I can't actually get it working. I've tried stripping my xorg.conf of all other modes and it's still defaulting to 1024*768@80Hz when I start X (or 1600*1200, or 1280*1024). Even nvidia-settings contains references to a load of resolutions that I haven't got in xorg.conf.

Is there any way to get it to forcibly use the modeline referenced in xorg.conf?

My current xorg.conf is below, if someone could modify it to the correct thing then please go ahead. I've got a feeling it needs things like "NoPredefinedModes", "NoXServerModes", "NoEdidModes" , "NoVesaModes" and "AllowNon60HzDFPModes" using which is why they're there (but commented out as i'm not sure...).

Thanks.

Default Re: Modeline problems.

Maybe you are confused and editing the wrong file?
The xorg.conf you posted contains the 1024x768 modeline and lots of references to resolutions you don't want, and it does not contain your PAL modeline. So of course it does not work.

Default Re: Modeline problems.

sorry, it was right but i should have said that's my current unmodified version, ie. the one i'm using right now. as i said i already tried stripping all the other values out and it did nothing, i'm just hoping someone here knows what needs to be removed and added.

fwiw my attempt(s , also tried a seperate modes section, different vert/horizsync values, keeping old modes in the file etc) went a bit like this (and again like i say, i still get a 1024*768 output with it):

Code:
....

Section "InputDevice"
   ....
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Generic Monitor"
    VendorName "CTX"
    ModelName "CTX MONITOR"
    DisplaySize 200 200
    HorizSync 13.0 - 16.0
    VertRefresh 50.0 - 60.0
    Modeline "720x576pali" 13.88 720 742 808 888 576 580 583 625 -hsync -vsync interlace
    Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Generic Video Card"
    Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Device "Generic Video Card"
    Monitor "Generic Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 24

   # Below sets DPI with Nvidia driver - pep2k
    Option "UseEdidDpi" "false"
    Option "Dpi" "96 x 96"

    Option "AddARGBVisuals" "True"
    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
    Option "NoLogo" "True"

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "720x576pali"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

EDIT: ahaa..... "15.8 kHz, 50.0 Hz, Monitor cannot display as the sync is out of range..." or something to that effect. The magic value was:

Option "UseEDID" "FALSE"

which may or may not be affected by all the other ignore-edid type stuff i had set at the same time:

Option "ModeValidation" "NoPredefinedModes"
Option "ModeValidation" "NoXServerModes"
Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"
Option "ModeValidation" "NoVesaModes"
Option "ModeValidation" "AllowNon60HzDFPModes"

and that was with the following horiz sync/ vert refresh set:

HorizSync 13.0 - 16.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 60.0

all in all it seems like a pal related mode was being output, i'm gonna try mess about and see if i can actually get something else displayed now so i can check it was 720*576 too...

EDIT 2: hmm not the best sign; I just changed the horizsync/vertrefresh value to something that i knew would work, thinking it would keep the 720*576 res (the only mode in xorg.conf while being told to ignore all edid/any other default modes) and it *still* decided to spit out a 1600*1200 resolution (also at a working refresh presumably decided elsewhere too). now, one of us is being possesed by ungodly interfering forces, and i'm starting to wonder if it's not the pc...

Default Re: Modeline problems.

Right, pretty sure I've cracked it now. Below is my ***UNTESTED*** 720*576 PAL 50Hz Interlaced xorg.conf, and the Xorg.0.log from it. The log looks good, with the highlights being:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0): "720x576pali"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 720 x 576
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "720x576pali"

which, when compared to my other efforts ("mode not validated..." when it defaulted to other res's, and when loading my 1024 modeline correctly it looks much the same as above) it looks like it should be working fine, outputting the correct 720*576pali line in xorg.conf.

The changes needed from my original file were a HorizSync and VertRefresh in range with the modeline, and all edid data ignored. Hope this'll help some of ya, now I just gotta go test it on a tv (if this thread ain't updated within 24hrs assume it blew up and i died )
