Default Laptop (external?) sound card

Hey there sports fans...

As my sig denotes, I have a Dell XPS M1210, which comes with a built in 5.1 sound card, albeit a ****ty one. When I configure it for 5.1 output, the rear speakers have very faint output, nowhere near compared to the SoundBlaster Live! 7.1 I used to have on my previous desktop.

Since I'll be spending a lot of time at home this upcoming semester, I was thinking it was worthwhile getting a sound card for my laptop. I want something with at least 5.1.

So far this is the only thing I've found locally, but I'm willing to import better options if the price is right:
Creative External Sound Blaster Live! SB0490 5.1 Channels 24-bit 48kHz in 5.1 mode and up to 96kHz in stereo mode USB Interface Sound Card
I know it isn't very good, and compatibility issues with Vista scare me.

Anyone have any suggestions?

What XDanger showed is different than mine.

ZS Notebook, something like that, still by Creative though. It worked like charm, no more lag in game as well when I play. Basically, it's much better than integrated/laptop. And I don't think I've had problem with Vista with it, I can't remember.........

the ZS is probably a better buy as you dont need to purchase a separate dongle for to plug the wires in

Thanks for the input guys. I'm looking into both options now.

I think it's a well-known fact that Creative Drivers tend to suck, so I'm wondering if there are other brand alternatives out there. I know very little about audio stuff.

Thanks again.

the one in the first post is EXACTLY what i have. I had a laptop that needed 5.1, and still use it with my desktop. Probably bought around 2 years ago. If using with Vista 64, not sure about anything else, you have to get drivers from their site. Everything sounds fine, i am not an audio junkie, and my speakers are also at least 3 years old, if not more. I am happy with my setup, sounds fine, and i can hear "direction" noise from footsteps in FPS games like counter strike. If you want something reliable, go for that, i do believe they also have one that goes in the "micro card" slot.
EDIT: once i got drivers, had ZERO problems with sound. Its also kind of tricky to set up the right choice in vista, but had no problems with hardware or drivers.
