Thumbs down 169.07 fps drop

Been trying Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Linux Mint all three in previous and current version. And now Open Suse. Tried with 169.07 and with 9639 X didn't start.

The problem is in games and 3d acceleration. The first 10 minutes are great and good fps, but then the fps drops and after a minute down to 1-5 fps. This happens in CS steam (wine), Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, GLTron and so on.

Below is "nvidia-bug-report" attached. Please help me I want to play games...

I have Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 with 64MB ram.

It might be the card overheating; keep a watch on the temps. Another possibility is memory leaks. There was a version of Xorg which leaked, gobbled up available ram causing problems. You have version 7.2, the latest is 7.3. A way to check this is ssh in (or view from console terminal) and watch a "top" session looking at memory usage for system/processes. That was system ram, the other is video ram. The 8800 GTS 320 especially once had a problem there with leaks, but how to tell/debug that I don't know.

Everything works in Windows though. So I don't think it is overheating .

Now I've tried with Xorg 7.3 (1.4). The same thing there

Before it starts to drop the top reports cpu to around 95-105%, and memory to around 15%. When the fps drops down to ~5 fps the cpu is 165-175% and memory was 16,5%.

I take it the game - say it was quake3.x86 - was at 165-175%? Or all processes together? Which process is hogging the cpu(s) can you tell? It won't list what the kernel is taking up unfortunately... try to deduce that. For instance if free ram is being chewed up mysteriously, no user process fingered, it will eventually thrash swap - a give away of a leak.

It was ioQuake that took that resources... Sorry about that. And the other processes used their normal amount. No mysterious processes that used all the ram.

I would have thought that trying so many driver versions and distros would result in at least one combination working. All I can suggest now, and it is a long shot, is that the game logs may show something eg by bringing up the console for messages.

Nothing in dmesg. And nothing in the Quake console.

I tried to lower the mhz on the card, in case it was a heat problem. But the same thing happend then... Lowered from 300/600 to 200/400.. Still the same. And in Windows everything works But I hate Windows. I want to save that space for something useful, not with viruses

Hi, I'm seeing the same, but it is not driver related:

7600GT runs fine with 100-14.11 and 169.07.
A 8600GT in the same PC with everything else unchanged show the fps drop from 60 to about 10 after 20 minutes, with both drivers, in doom3.

In Windows the 8600 runs fine all the time.

We're experiencing a similar issue with the 169.07 drivers. When running our visual simulation, 169.07 causes X and the simulation to stutter occasionally - freezing the machine for about 1 second each time it stutters.

Nothing in dmesg and nothing in the logs.

Operating GPU temperatures under load is ~ 75 - 80 C.
All of our machines are 2 x Dual Core AMD Opteron Processor 2200 with a GeForce 8800 GTX using a 2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp kernel, and they all exhibit the same issue.

Unfortunately with the previous 100.14.11 drivers, we were experiencing random lockups and X crashes. 169.07 gives us more system stability but we're paying with random 1 second long freezes.

I'm experiencing the same problem playing Unreal Tournament 2004 on my 8800GT machine (Opnesuse 10.3, 64 bit, AMD X2 4600+, 2 GB Ram). The game gets occasionally framedrops and stutters like hell. No Problems under windows (Vista / XP) at all (at least not that kind of problem ) UT2004 also has some grafic glitches. I noticed some blocks/stripes in the sky textures. I have seen them first in the Antalus DM- Level.

"Good" to hear that I am not the only one. To bad nvidia don't seems to care about Linux Had this been Windows it would have been fixed within a week. We are lucky if it EVER get's fixed.
