My 500gb mybook died along with all of my personal data and photos from Europe trip.
Please someone tell me of cheapest data recovery possible? I've got $400 at minimum so far... ![]() Their hard drives always seem to... die... after the warranty period ends.

hard drives die, you can't change that
thats why if that data was important you should have a back-up of it

how did it die? Buy another OEM drive and pull the I/O board. then slap the old one onto the ner drive and return it as DOA. Problem solved

like i said how did it die? Is it a head or the controller? If its the controller then jut swap it! If its the heads then buy a identical drive and take your time and do it right! The hardest part it keeping the heads from smacking together once you slide the platers out... after that its a cake walk

Probably unlike you, I don't have a dust-free room with an ION blaster.
Care to do the operation for me if I send you 2 hard drives, the broken and the fixed, and $100?

I am far from a expert and have only had 1 successful transplant. (I have done 2). The heads are VERY fragile if they get bent even the slightest bit your screwed! Since I'm a lazy bastard and your new to hard drives I recommend figuring out what went wrong with it and seeing if its some thing your comfortable fixing... Replacing the controller is as easy as it gets
The armature or motor isn't.

LOL, if you open the drive cover guess what 1 dust fiber will not fit between the head and the platter so do the math.
