PS3 game load times

Ok, so one of my friends decided to buck the trend and bought a 80gig ps3 today. He brought it over and hooked it up at my place. He played a bit of motorstorm, and then we played some VF5. Both he and I noticed that the system seems to have pretty long load times for games. For VF5 it seemed like there was a 10-15 sec wait to load a match. Is that normal? He bought a open box model, and updated it to the newest firmware, but really.. is there something wrong, or is that normal for those games?

Motorstorm used to be bad (haven't played VF5) on just the changing vehicles... but I THINK in a patch they made it so it just showed pictures instead of loading the whole thing... but I can't say for sure because I haven't personally done it because I finished motorstorm and no longer play it.

Blurays biggest thorn is its current read speeds. Its slower the HDDVD, so once again game makers either need to get creative in loading routines, or backup the game to HD.

It's normal. The load times are rediculous on this thing. Fight Night Round 3 freezes up every time a boxer's image is loading on the menus. Tekken 5 is all on the hard drive and it still takes a few seconds longer than "I think it should". Virtual Fighter 5 is crappy too, especially for a fighting game. I haven't bought anymore PS3 games (plenty of PS2), but so far I've been disappointed with the load times on the thing.

Huh, most games load pretty fast considering their reading from the disk. Ones that preload data on the HD load faster then normal console games. Hell Most PS3 games load quicker then many PC titles... Crysis and The Witcher are two that have horrible load times.

In comparison the PS3 loads Oblivion quicker then the X360 but slower then the PC.

No problem with loading time here either on my PS3. I'd consider it about right for what the gfx and game are doing.

i think loading times is a drawback for consoles in general.

Ahh, ok, so load times of 15sec or more are normal on the ps3. Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to pass it on.

Not really, There are many titles that have far less load time to even no load time (uncharted). It really varies from title to title.

Also some games automatically start caching data for you the first few times you load them. So not only are you loading the game but your loading another GB or two of data to be cached. Once everything is cached to the HDD in the PS3 games will load much quicker than just from the disc.

What games are on HDDVD's in the first place? Also, games are always padded with data so that they reside on the outermost tracks of the disc. This way the reading speeds are significantly increased and the seek time is lowered.
