Well, I got an email from MicroCenter saying they have it for $50.00 off their regular price so I pulled the trigger on it. It's running nicely, a nice bump from the E6600. One thing, though, core 1 runs like 5-9 degrees hotter than core 0, is that normal? Unlike the E8400, both cores on my old E6600 runs about the same degree (+ or - 1). Should I take it back and get a different one?

My cores on my E6600 do that as well
right now, core temp is saying Core0 35, Core 1 39 (idle) I wouldn't worry about it. The processor sounds solid.

What speed did you have your E6600 at? I am doing my best not to upgrade until Nehalem.

Haven't seen alot of feedback from the E8XXX stuff...they look like really good bang for buck processors.

I guess the IHS isn't flat or Intel didn't mount it too good, so contact with one core isn't as good as the other one. The tech guy at MC said I should bring it to Intel if I feel it is defective. So, I'm stuck and I know one core will die sooner because it's running 10-12 degrees hotter the other. He said one core will just have about 12% less life than the other one. That's still not defective, he continued. I told him 3-5 degrees difference is acceptable, but 7-12 isn't normal. Regardless, I guess his arrogant plays too much affect, so he wasn't buying into my logical reasoning. Will wait and see. I'm sure I will have my saying one day.

how did you apply the thermal paste and install the hsf? could be a defect but it sounds like user error.
I would contact intel, they've always been good about making things right ![]()
